New York – Journalists Denied Access To Crime Reports Per NYPD’s Orders

New York – New York City’s 77 police precincts have been ordered by the NYPD to stop giving information to the media regarding neighborhood crimes.
DNAinfo New York (http://dnain.fo/1gd4AF4) reports that the orders were communicated via an NYPD announcement sent citywide. According to the announcement, “Any requests by media to view complaint reports will be referred to the office of the Deputy Commissioner for Public Information.”
The NYPD’s public information office, known as DCPI, is NYPD’s public information office, and usually distributes only select major crimes such as murders, grand larcenies and sexual assaults. The information typically does not include low-level neighborhood crimes. Neighborhood residents could traditionally find that information at precincts.
The NYPD has not released a comment.
