In an interview given to JTA.org (http://bit.ly/1bg8gxX) the man in the photo published December 16 identified himself as Yochanan Katz, an American expat who now lives in Jerusalem with his wife and two children.

The major snowstorm in Jerusalem was the subject and front-page news for many major U.S. newspapers. The Wall Street Journal captured the image of Katz snowboarding in Gan Sacher Park in Jerusalem, his tzitzit visibly streaming behind him.

Katz says he’s receiving positive feedback to the photo of him catching air with his tzitzit. “Lots of people are very proud of me. They’re surprised to see a religious Jew streaming through the air on a snowboard; it’s kind of an oddity.”

Katz, a resident of Jerusalem who made Aliyah in 2005, is a 2003 graduate of Colorado State University, where he served as team captain of the men’s lacrosse team. A native of Hopkins, Minnesota, Katz led the Rams to two RMILL Championships, in 2001 and 2003, and is ranked in CSU’s top 20 all-time in both points and assists.
