Val Morin, Canada - The Quebec Court of Appeal ruled in favour of a small Laurentian town that wants to stop the Belz Hasidic community from using two chalets as a synagogue and school.

But the Congregation of the Followers of the Rabbis of Belz say they're not giving in and will apply to have their case heard at the Supreme Court of Canada.

The tranquil town, about 90 kilometres northwest of Montreal, claims the group lied about how the two cottages would be used when it applied about 20 years ago for a building permit.

While the congregation's lawyer, Julius Grey, said "the essence of freedom of religion prevails over laws and bylaws," the court ruled that freedom of religion doesn't give one the right to worship or to build a religious school wherever one wants.

The members of the community, totalling about 200 people, have been spending eight-week summer vacations in Val Morin for more than 20 years in 16 cottages scattered along the Rivière du Nord.

Non-Jewish residents have complained the Hasidim create garbage, traffic and noise.

That judge in the Superior Court judgment on the case wrote, and the appeal court concurs, that the Belz community could replace the synagogue and the school, by building on 186,000 square feet of land it owns nearby.

But the community argues that land is mostly swamp and is not usable. They also claim to be too poor to afford to build elsewhere. [montrealgazette]

I am not defending Belz, but French Canadians are not known for their love of Jews

MR. (or)MS. bp.er... Don't try to be such a Tzaddik (among goyim) and all the GARBAGE that's being spewed, literally. The same verse (about garbage, traffic and noise) is spewed whenever and wherever a new Shul or Yeshiva is attempted to be opened. Be it Young Israel, Yeshivish or Chassidic. All of the these presumed problems could be solved with some good will. They're only a pretext (pls. lk. up in dict.) Take a SHPATZIR (pls...) in some neighborhoods, and you'll see churches on [almost] every corner. Some even in middle of the block, in addition to the ones on the corner. We never hear of any objections to those edifices! Hack nisht in Tchaynik, OK!

Too POOR? my foot! Go dump your garbage back in boro park and wiiliamsburg. At least if you would clean up after yourself and not make a chillul hashem where evr you go then maybe maybe people would be more listening and understanding. Would you like goyim coming to your places and start dumping garbage and making noise and setting churches every where?? think about it for a minute.
