As reported by ABC News (http://ab.co/JIhQ6i) current guidelines say sugar should not make up more than 10 percent of the calories in our diet, but the paper suggests that could be cut to 5 percent.

Many health experts agree with the change due to the extremely high obesity rates around the world.

Experts warn that processed food industries could campaign against the dietary changes.

Professor Paul Zimmet, Director Emeritus of the Baker IDI Heart and Diabetes Institute, says that while it’s a positive step for WHO to take leadership on the issue, it won’t completely fix the problem of obesity.

A WHO spokesman confirmed it is conducting studies in relation to sugar guidelines, but does not know when any new guidelines will be put into effect.
