Fresh off a honeymoon in Israel, Anderson sent a letter to Benjamin Netanyahu on Wednesday urging him to support the legislation. If passed, it would make Israel the first country in the world to impose a national fur clothing ban.

More than 40 lawmakers have endorsed the bill, promoted by the Israel-based International Anti-Fur Coalition. Netanyahu previously has expressed views sympathetic with the animal rights movement.

In her letter, Anderson said the way animals “suffer and die for fur violates Jewish principles.” She added that by passing the bill, “Israel would set an example of compassion for the rest of the world to follow.”

While I’m not sure Anderson is the best person to take advice from regarding “Jewish principles” she is right about this. And while the pic here is of a shtreimel, her actual idea is to ban all fur, not just religious.

Why is it that most stars are clueless about real life? Why is it that most non-religious Jews worship the Gentiles. For centuries the non-believing Jews have always needed the love and sympathy of the Gentile world. This is why many secular Jews in Israel are willing to make a sucker deal with the Palestinians because they fear they will be hated by the Gentiles. This is why non-religious Jews fight for causes that they feel will make them accepted and loved by the Gentiles they worship. History has shown that the more the Jew tries to behave like a Gentile in order to gain acceptance the more they are hated as the Jews experienced in Germany in WWII. Contrary to MS. Anderson’s erroneous beliefs the Torah encourages the use of animals to serve human needs so that the animal can receive a spiritual elevation and rectification. The Torah tells us that not using animals for human benefit is doing the animal a big disservice. Isn’t it interesting that the German’s had the strictest animal protection laws before WWII and look what happened with their misplaced kindness to animals. I say to Anderson get a real life and help people before you help animals

Perhaps the rest of the Chasidic world would finally give up the shtreimel and go the way of Chabad.

Honestly, just the cost of a decent Shtreimel is an uneeded burden, maybe synthetic or just a regular black hat would be a better long term solution.

Really? Shame to Israel for even considering the bill.

I think Natanyahu has more pressing issues to deal with then banning shtrameils. She should have gone to Lapid, he would have gotten right on it. I love how an “actress” known for her “body of work” is telling us how to be an example to the other nations of the world. Fur- hahaha and she’s worried how the animals are treated, for once a Hollywood star isn’t referring to ” the occupied people”

Good idea for Israel to be the first country in the world to ban manufacturing clothes made of animal fur. It’s a small investment for Israel to get the support of the liberal leaning, anti Israel community.

This is rather funny. Pamela Anderson, the paragon of jewish principles, lecturing Bibi. Next time she’s in Israel, maybe she’ll give a shiur on “Jewish principles”.

Mild topic unless you own a streimel.

It would probably be a nice thing to think that our people do not kill animals for their fur at all. I guess that is not the situation with the nice furs of the streimels and perhaps other designs. I personally do not yet perhaps own a streimel but I would think that it would be an asset if I was in a True Torah community in a Chassidic Village.

Torah does not discriminate against the dress of a faith of prescribed atonement. If you are going to own a streimel that is made of fur, it is not going to sink your soul in the unorthodox variety of human indiscretion. If you really think that the ownership of fur is an issue and you already have one, give to the humane society.

Perhaps there is an issue here and I clearly am not in the ultra orthodox communities, but there may be some consideration for the fur trade that the Jewish Soul might wish to decide. I think that being the most ethical of all people, our people have a distinguishing assessment of human trust that goes along with the commodity of change.

guess that actor never learned up the famous piece about hunting in the Noda B’Yehudah 🙂

Also pretty funny that all comments here make it seem as though Anderson is attacking shtreimelach. People, get it in your heads that not everyone is always after you- you’re not that important. Read before you write.

I assume she will no longer wear leather outfits (when she’s dressed – which is not often) and will dispense with leather shoes and pocketbooks.

I don’t know about animal rights but Its redicolus to pay 2K for a shtreimal. This yerushalmis don’t have food to put on the table yet they pay exohbernt fees for there hats. Make it out of fake fur for a quarter of the price. Spending 2k for a shtreimel is not what the Besht or any ehrlicha rebahad in my mind

It is not a mitzvah to wear a shtreimel, it is a custom. We live in a democratic country (it doesn’t feel like it sometimes) and Israel is a democratic country. That being said, you can eat what you like and you can wear on your head whatever suits your fancy. No one can tell you what to do!

Using fur in and of itself defies no Jewish principal. Hashem gave the skins of animals to adam – to man to utilize for clothing. However, tzarei balei chaim is a real concept. If an animal is killed in a humane fashion, even for clothing, it is permitted. That being said, the fact that any Jew thinks one needs to spend thousands of dollars on a specific hat because it somehow makes him more holy … is ridiculous.

Although it is well documented that before many eastern European actually banned it, the streimel was the “levush” of shabbos for all eastern Europe and Russia, there is no mitsva. Its was the Rebbes of Gur and one other Rebbe that decided to go back to wearing it after the ban was lifted. Chabad decided against it. This was in the 1700’s or 1800s. While using animals for human needs is a Torah concept, which would include for clothing and warmth, the streimel as its made today has fur for show without any warmth value whatsoever, so not only isnt it a mitzva, it may be an issur of baal tashchis to kill the animals to harvest fur for a streimel.
As far as number 6 is concerned; he is very correct with his reference to the Nazis and Germany. People who have more rachmanus on animals; misplaced rachmanus, can certainly digress into being achzarim to people. Its is well documented that Hitler and many Ss officers has huge rachmanus on animals and their german sheppards. This is the warped mida of amalek. It was not unheard of for a nazi guard to be crying over the loss of a german sheppards death while being a killer of jews at the same time, i believe Aaman Goeth was one such person.

Ms. Anderson is like a short cut to boredom huh? If you like her and think she is on the money, maybe you are off your kilter too. Overall, she has only mass appeal to the trash squad. And if you think that Israel is about to stop their interest in Streimels and other possibilities of fur, you are really ridiculous. Torah is not going to remove the contained experience of trust from the world of trust. It may not be a blessing to kill a lot of animals for their fur and it will indeed count against your neshama, but you can do other charitable acts and overall overcome the hex of any curse you would endure for hurting an animal. And as above, when the item is used for religious purposes, it is actually still a positive expression.

For the sake of accuracy (because I already agree with everyone here, so it would just be redundant to add the same thing):
Miss Anderson is actually Canadian, not American (“U.S. Actor To Israeli PM: Using Fur Violates Jewish Principles”)

Yeah coming from the same mouth of the “I’d rather be naked than wear fur”.. Should this dumb blonde joke even be reported???

But she has no problem selling her body to everyone that would have it! What a sick joke, her coming to lecture us on what is right and what is wrong. This world is actually going to hell in a handbasket….if we have someone like “Pamela Anderson” lecturing us on ANYTHING!

Let me ask all of you who are against shtreimlach, supposedly for the sake of the poor animals, do you not wear leather shoes, borsalino hats or leather jackets, huh?!!
And if you don’t ever wear animal products why dont I see anyone commenting that a ban should be made on ALL products made from animals?
    Some people are such hypocrates.
