Police say Vincent Gargano of Setauket (seht-AHK’-eht) was arrested Tuesday. He was charged with criminal mischief and criminal trespassing. The name of his attorney was not immediately known.

A telephone message left at Gargano’s home was not returned.

Police say Gargano cut a Cablevision fiber optic cable wire and another Cablevision wire on Jan. 7

The outage affected about 6,000 customers. A Cablevision spokeswoman declined to comment.

Verizon spokesman John Bonomo (BAHN’-uh-moh) confirmed that Gargano was an employee. He said in a statement that Gargano’s alleged actions are not consistent with how Verizon conducts business.

He said the company is cooperating with investigators.
