Kiev – Ukraine’s political crisis escalated sharply Tuesday and police have moved in to clear the sprawling protest tent camp of anti-government demonstrators in Kiev’s Independence Square.

At least 14 people were killed six of them police officers, and scores injured in the ongoing violent, often fiery battles between protesters and police. Riot police advanced toward protesters using a water cannon and stun grenades after shutting down nearby subway stations. Thousands of protesters had filled Independence Square earlier in the day, sensing that Ukraine’s political crisis was reaching a critical turning point.
