New York - Bob Abernethy, anchor at PBS television: We remember the Holocaust today with a profile of the late Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach, a Jewish troubadour in the 1960s and '70s who preached love and peace and whose music has become a staple of religious observances in Jewish synagogues and homes. Carlebach was a Holocaust survivor who refused to lose his faith in God and in humankind. Our reporter is Menachem Daum, in New York. He says every melody in this story was composed by Shlomo Carlebach.

His (R. Shlomo Carlebach) methods were sometimes a bit beyond the norm. (After all, we couldn't transform the entire world into one [happy] commune) But there is no doubt that he had Ahavas Yisroel and a Universal love for humanity!
He came from an illustrious German-Jewish family;many of whom died al kiddush Hashem.He learned in Lakewood,.a student of Rav A.Kotler,zt"lDuring the 1950's,when the 'Baby-Boomers were just growing up,they were enthralled by the music of the time,doo-wop.S>C> blended thgis type of music into the most beautiful Jewish melodies that became world-famous and to this day,are used in our tefillos on Shabbossos and Yomim Tovim in shuls of all types all over the world. Sholom (Shlomo) al Yisroel!!
