New York City - Sanitation: Clean Your Pet Doo, Or Fine.

New York City - City sanitation officers are sniffing out more crime.

The number of dog owners getting nipped with summonses for not scooping their pooch's poop more than doubled this year as part of a citywide crackdown on the nasty behavior.

"Clean up after your dog or we are going to get you," warned Sanitation Commissioner John Doherty.

Since July, his officers have handed out 775 tickets to dog owners who failed to clean up after their pets - compared with 327 for the same period last year.

The fines, which can hit $100, brought $28,748 to the city's coffers, twice as much as last year.

Paul Garner, a 55-year-old lawyer who was playing with his dog last week in Tribeca, had another solution.

"They should arrest people who don't clean up after their dog and put them in a cell with poop and make them clean it all up," he said. "That will change their behavior."

"Anyone who owns a dog and dosn't pick up after them is a jerk," declared Parks Commissioner Adrian Benepe.

its about time i had an incident on my block as i saw a dog owner letting her dog poop on a neighbors lawn and just left i went after her and told her i saw what just happened and said why did she not clean up she tried denying it then i said i will report u so she started saying nasty stuff that i prefer not to write it or say it... but i am sure u all get my point but now i am afraid not to say anything cause she leaves nearby and i dont want to start anything but they should really start looking around just like they look to see if ur parked by a pump or by a school enough is enough. this particular has a chutzpah not only to let her dog poop and not clean up but to let it on someone else's lawn disgusting... if it grosses u out then dont get a dog u dogs

The problem is that they don't usually happen to catch the pet owner "in the act". So the next one to be fined is the property owner, who is left with this filth on his property.

My neighbor has a unique solution to not haning to clean up after her dog. She walks the dog in middle of the street & has the dog do it's thing there. She curses all the cars who beep at her!!!
