Manhattan, NY – IN PHOTOS-VIDEO: Orthodox NYC Jews Protest Proposed Israeli Draft

A dance circle is formed after thousands of Orthodox Jews gathered in New York, Sunday, March 9, 2014, on Water Street in lower Manhattan, to pray and protest against the Israeli government's proposal to pass a law that would draft strictly religious citizens into its army. (AP Photo/Craig Ruttle)Manhattan, NY – Lower Manhattan turned into a human river of black-garbed people on Sunday as tens of thousands ultra-Orthodox Jews took to the streets, their anguished prayers booming through loudspeakers in protest of Israel’s proposal to draft strictly religious citizens into its military.

Organizers kept to tradition, with men and women in separate groups as they are at religious events — the men wearing skull caps or black top hats.

Their message to Israel was simple.

“We’re all united against military service for religious men in Israel because it doesn’t allow for religious learning,” said Peggy Blier, an interior designer from Brooklyn. “The Israeli government is looking to destroy religious society and make the country into a secular melting pot.

Israel’s parliament, the Knesset, is expected to vote on the conscription bill later this month.

The bill, which would not go fully into effect until 2017, would impose criminal sanctions on ultra-Orthodox draft dodgers. However, yeshiva students would have the right to defer service until age 26.

Shmuel Gruis, 18, a rabbinical student from Phoenix studying at a Long Island yeshiva, was clutching two tomes of Jewish prayers as he hurried to the male section of Sunday’s rally.

Of the Israeli Orthodox youths who would be affected by a mandatory draft, he said, “These kids, a lot of them don’t know how to hold a gun. They don’t know what physical warfare is.”

“Their whole world and their whole lifestyle is peace and love and in doing mitzvahs,” he said, using the Yiddish word for good deeds. “And you take a bunch of kids out of the environment where they come from — in my eyes, it’s wrong.”

The gathering came a week after about 300,000 demonstrators in Jerusalem protested the Knesset proposal by blocking roads and paralyzing the city.

In New York, the activists poured out of Manhattan subway tunnels onto Fulton, Water and Pearl streets — just steps from Wall Street.

Sunday’s two-hour rally brought together New York’s most Orthodox Jews from various sects, many based in Brooklyn, Queens and Long Island, others living in the village of Kiryas Joel in Orange County, north of the city.

Organizers put the crowd count at over 50,000.

Some of the Hebrew prayers were led by Rabbi Aaron Teitelbaum, a spiritual head of the Satmars living in Brooklyn’s Williamsburg neighborhood.

As the largest Jewish community outside Israel, the New Yorkers have tight bonds with Orthodox Israelis, some of whom emigrated from the United States.

“The problem is, anyone who goes into the Israeli military becomes secular, and that would erase our whole tradition,” says Yitz Farkas, a member of the Brooklyn-based True Torah Jews organization.

Since Israel’s founding in 1948, the ultra-Orthodox, who make up about 8 percent of Israel’s 8 million citizens, largely have been allowed to avoid compulsory military service to pursue their religious studies.

The ultra-Orthodox insist their young men serve the nation through prayer and study, maintaining a pious way of life that has kept Jewish culture alive through centuries of persecution.

But the exemption issue has ripped open a huge gash between Israel’s secular majority and a passionate religious minority.

Enraged secular Israelis say the ultra-Orthodox are not doing their fair share by being exempt from service that is compulsory for other Jewish Israelis.

The issue was at the core of last year’s election, which brought to power a center-right government that has been pushing for reforms requiring the ultra-Orthodox to serve in the military.

Please correct the article, This was NOT a “demonstration or protest” this was a Prayer vigil. No one protested against the Israeli Government.

While they were davening with such kavanah I hope they also davened for all the thousands upon thousands of frum victims of child abuse and molestation, all those kids who were and are kicked out of yeshivas on a daily basis, and all the frum kids who are pushed and shoved off the derech every single day. Where are the tefillos that are so necessary for OUR bochurim and OUR Yungerleit that are at risk here in New York and in the United States every single day.

Why do they worry more about the neshomos of those who choose to live in Eretz Yisroel where every citizen is required to serve and do miluim? If they don’t want to follow the laws of the land, they can choose to live here. They don’t support the government or the State of Israel yet they want the privilege of living off the backs of others. They CHOOSE not to work, They CHOOSE not to provide for their families, and they CHOOSE not to follow the law and learn how to defend themselves and their families. If they believe that their emunah and bitachon will keep them safe, then they must also believe that their emunah and bitachon will keep them safe in the IDF. Why should others risk their lives to protect them?

Here’s a simple question. We don’t go fight against our enemies because we are learning Torah and that’s protecting us, yet when the government comes up with decrees against us small or large we run out of the yeshiva and pour into the streets to demonstrate. Can anyone explain why learning works against the Arabs but not against the Jews

Simple truth: if the Gedolim would have made an Asifa to thank the Idf for their service and the government for supporting the Yeshivas for the last 30 years we would not be in this “terrible situation” today.

Doesn’t look like a huge success here in NY. In Yerusalem this crowd is a typical L’vaya. Print up huge posters for a funeral of guy named Friedman, as everyone knows someone named Friedman and they have all the free time in the world. Bingo!.you have a funeral that will resemble this thing.

“These kids, a lot of them don’t know how to hold a gun. They don’t know what physical warfare is.” Not a problem, the army will teach you all you need to know. After you have done your national service, you can go back and spend the rest of your life studying from dawn til midnight.

    very nice photos.
This was a very nice event and a big kiddush hashem because everyone was respectful to each other.
Everyone is entitled to their personal beliefs about the israeli army draft. If you disagree with the policy of drafting yeshiva students, then go to the streets peacefully and pray that hashem should help and that whatever is best according to hashem should happen.
That is what we did today. not with rioting but with peaceful and respectful prayer, and for this I am proud to be Jewish.

Great pictures, this paints the picture of what was going on to a point
I see people that are learning, WORKING, volunteering in their communities and contributing to their society. I’m not sure what they are protesting though, In israel where every man and woman are obligated by law to serve they can do exactly the same as they do here in the US of A
they can serve their country with honor by going to the national service and contributing to their communities, then when they are discharged with honors (because we all know that the frum community members are serious when they do anything) they will have a way to earn an honest living without having to rely on government handouts or assistance. they will be paying tax and contributing to the health of the economy
oh wait…. one problem…. what would their politicians do?? lose all the power they have now? give away the chance to hold their communities by the place it hurts most… the pocketbook??? no way! they will not let it happen
what I’m trying to say is that just as they can go to work here, they can serve their communities here through Hatzoloh and Shomrim, and Misaskim, and Chaveirim so too they should in Israel!

I would like to support the asifa against the ways of The Jewish State, but I think that its probably G-ds will to keep Israel on the map. Sorry if I do not acknowledge the primacy of a poorer republic of jewish life. New hopes are with the varied experience with jews who serve in the IDF for me. Sorry!

Have we as a nation lost our ability to express gratitude to those who are willing to sacrifice their lives each day to protect us from the enemy? Israel is surrounded by millions of enemies, intent on destroying us were it not for the deterrent of the Israeli Army.. Where would Israel be today without its dedicated soldiers — both frum and non-frum — who fight on behalf of ALL Jews? Our Sages have taught us that it is unwise to depend on miracles…. Hashem wants us to participate as best we can..and He will do the rest. Yes, learning Torah is indispensable…..but there are occasions when taking up arms is also essential.

I think that its always nice to have Jews get together and daven to Hashem. But I also think that a solution to the drafting should be made as well. Not all the guys who are in yeshiva are learning. Just last week the IDF successfully intercepted a ship with weapons from Iran.

Chareidi mks have money to fly to New York for the day. Plenty of money to charter buses all around the NYC metro area, I guess the “Gedolim” have no problem blowing through Yiddishe Gelt to feed their egos.
It is something to keep in mind when allocations Tzedaka funds.

What sort of pressure would a bunch of people who do not live in Israel and who promise not to support it have? If Israel does not do what they demand, they will …. will do what exactly? Stop paying the Israeli taxes they do not already pay?

The Chareidim would serve in the army if it was their own army, they just don’t want to be put into a situation that they cant fully control.

this whole situation is so absurd. The draft Conscription is only for such a small amount of Chariedim. Their are so many Chareidim who dont want to be in Yeshiva, but are being forced to be there by their society pressures, why is it such a big deal if these chevra fight for Am Yisroel.

I think that the Isreali Gov, together with leading Rebbunim should set up a frame work of national service, where Yeshiva boys can volunteer and help the Gov on various different projects. This will save the Israeli Gov lots of money and also give chareidim a chance to live a Torahdiga lifestyle and at the same time avoid the terrible chillul Hashem of being known as moochers of Israeli society.

Many problems around the world are caused by Welfare programs. Many of the people at todays demonstration are on the dole from Uncle Sam. Most of the people in Eretz Yisroel who have time to demonstrate against their govt. are on the dole from the “Zionist Entity”. Europe and America are on the decline because of all the welfare they give out. Get rid of the welfare and people will have to go to work and if you have to go to work it forces you to become a normal law abiding person and manage your time and advocate for sensible government policies. I agree the Israeli government should not be forcing people into the army but I also feel they should not have to support people in learning.

It’s so weird- when the Chareidim resist going to the army there are some frum people who scream against this. But these same people are totaly quiet when the Israeli gov throws Jews out of their homes and land, keeps on making consesions to the Arabs even if they spit in their faces, and adopt self-defeating stances that put the entire Israel population in dangers way just to please the anti-Semitic Europeans and Arab loving Americans.
But to these empty souls nothing bothers them, only Chareidim not serving in the IDF!
While secular Israelis are very admirably putting their lives on the line they ARE ALSO POLLUTING ERETZ YISROEL WITH THEIR IMMORAL LIFESTYLES, EATING CHAZOR, BREAKING SHABBOS, ETC.
IF YOU DON’T CARE THAT OUR BACHURIM ARE EXPOSED TO THIS SCHMUTZ ON A STEADY BASIS THEN SOMETHING IS SEVERLY LACKING IN YOUR YIDDISHKEIT.
And sorry to burst your bubble, but the IDF is nothing compared to all the Arab nations surrounding Israel. Between Hezbollah, Egypt, Iran, etc. With the millions of ready ” freedom fighters” they keep on churning out, certainly a few million of these fanatics would be ready to fight Israel in a heartbeat. The IDF does not stand a chance. Only Hashem is our protection.
I love when people mention the Holocaust as a reason to have an army. They show their ignorance of history. The French army was very powerful and crumbled, the British and Americans lost thousands of soldiers, and the mighty Russian army lost millions of men to the Germans! Only the combined Allied effort could subdue the Germans after millions of lives had been lost.
And here Israel stands alone between millions of fanatic Arabs! ONLY HASHEM CAN PROTECT US. Sure we must do,our hishtadlus, I’m all for defense, but not at the expense of losing our identity. An example of losing our Jewish identity is when ironically a lot of IDF soldiers protecting the Jewish nation don’t have a problem intermarrying. But of course for those worshipping the IDF, like some commentors here, this is but a minor issue.
Well it’s time to see the forest, not just the trees- the IDF is not worth much without God’s protection and the Chareidim’s learning the Torah and keeping the mitzvos and leading pure Jewish lives are a more powerful force in the protection of the Jews in Eretz Yisroel!

Protesting in Israel about an Israeli law or issue is fine, but to protest in the U.S. against Israel is the height of stupidity and a Chillul Hashem. If you go to any Rov involved in the protest if you can go to the goyish authorities to report a Jew for wrongdoing, they would say no, it’s Mesirah. What is the difference between that type of Mesirah and this protest? It’s also going to the Goyim to complain about other Jews. What would it accomplish? It certainly won’t change anything other than turning people against Jews. No wonder we’re in such a mess and Moshiach isn’t here yet. We don’t deserve him.

It also shows how comfortable Jews are in the United States, in Golus. I guess that’s where they belong. Enjoy it for now, at your own peril.

We are now in a world where Ultra Orthodox in NYC are protesting against the Israeli government and Don King is on CNN waiving an Israeli flag. I guess I’m at a loss for words. Only 60 years after the greatest atrocity in modern human history, and the in fighting amongst Jews is rising and seems to be at an unfortunate precedence. Some of the comments on this site are clear microcosm of the “hate”; it’s too vitriolic on both sides. In fighting has led to the demise of many nationalities/cultures. Lets keep things civil. Remember, we are all Jews.

I do not mean to besmirch all of the Israeli soldiers when I called the IDF “a pig eating army”. My mistake, I regret the way I wrote it. Yes, there are wonderful people serving in the army, frum or not, and certainly it is a great mesiros nefesh.
YET, THE FACT IS that the IDF is FULL of gays, ramapant immoral acts between men and women soldiers, atheism, Shabbos desecration and yes treifos ( this is saying it nicely as pig eating seems to bring out a defensive reaction among the commentators.)
So in this treife pot you want to throw in bucharim?!!!
Does it mean that all who come out of the army are bad people? Of course not! And surely bad people are found in the beis medrash too. Does this mean that ALL who come out have done acts that are an abomination to Hashem? Also not.
But the FACT is that A LARGE percentage of these soldiers are reeking of immorality by the time they are out if the army.
Please note, although I understand the anti-Zionist shittah, I don’t agree with that shittah in it’s entirety and I DO VERY MUCH APPRICIATE THOSE WHO SERVE IN THE IDF. Nevertheless, the army as whole has much to rectify regarding the atmosphere and it is not a place for bachurim.
