It cost $2.1 million to place 2,300 LED lights in the tunnel that links New Jersey with New York.
The Port Authority says the 45-watt lights will reduce electricity use by an estimated 1.2 million kilowatt-hours a year, saving more than $283,000 annually.
The agency says 42 million drivers travel through the Lincoln Tunnel each year.
The Port Authority installed more than 3,000 LED lights in the Holland Tunnel last year, resulting in an annual savings of $250,000.
So one of the people beim shisel can now pocket another 283g….. ni git
I kind of get the math. they will possibly save money years down the line if the bulbs last as long as they are supposed to.
There are also savings in labor, changing bulbs is labor intensive for the Tunnel people.
Please try to reprint the article in about 13 years when the savings arrive. This takes into account some loss of use of the money spent on bulbs now.
Maybe now they’ll lower the tolls.
$283,000 is nothing to an outfit like the Port Authority. That’s like the yearly salary of one manager when you count overtime.
that comes out to $913.04 per bulb installed, wow somebody should do some explaining!!! now i understand why the tolls are so high…
To all of you skeptics and cynics: If you would look into using LED lighting in your homes, you too could be saving hundreds of dollars a year in electricity bills! Good LEDs can save between 80-90% of the electricity used per bulb, which adds up to real savings. Believe me, we did it a couple of years ago and can see the savings in the bills. An additional bonus is that LEDs emit very little heat as compared with regular or halogen lights, thus reducing the amount of air conditioning needed in the summer, thus leading to further savings. Once again, this is very noticeable.
So it will take 8 years until they will actually save any money. Its great for those with huge electric bills and can afford $2.1 Million in one shot – but who is actually paying that electric bill? You & I who drive across the bridges & tunnels. Will we see any savings? Will the cost for tolls & EZ pass go down?
they did the same on other bridges & the subways. Has the MTA brought down the price, or has any intention to do so in 8 years time? I think not.
I would like to invest in LED bulbs myself but the light is not even as bright as fluorescent, nevermind incandescent. And the price is exorbitant, that it would take me more than 10 years to actually save anything.
That’s enough money saved to create another traffic tie-up!
