Monticello – Kutsher’s Country Club For Sale For $50 Million

Monticello – One of the last old-time, family-owned Catskill resorts is up for sale. Kutsher’s Country Club is officially on the market for $50 million.
The listing comes about a month after the St. Regis Mohawks decided to forgo plans for a casino at the resort. Instead, the tribe decided to go with the Monticello Raceway, where they were five years ago before switching to Kutsher’s. “We saw a door possibly closing, and it gave us impetus to look at what options might be out there,” hotel owner Mark Kutsher said. “This has been an ordeal for five years and (the Kutsher family) is not willing to wait anymore.”
The $50 million asking price for the 1,400-acre resort includes the 400-room hotel, an 18-hole golf course, the sports complex, two lakes, two camps, and a bungalow colony.
The real estate listing is just one more sign of doom for the casino project, which went south a month ago.
The Mohawks believe their casino application for the raceway, which won federal approval years ago, is still valid. They had waited nearly five years for approval of the Kutsher’s casino – approval that never came.
The site plan, approved a year ago, expired Dec. 1, according to Thompson Supervisor. He said Kutsher requested a special meeting of the Thompson Planning Board to extend the site plan at the end of last month, but was denied.
In the meantime, Kutsher said, “We’re still here doing what we’ve always done. And if anything were to happen, I’d assume there would be continuity to our business.”
