New Jersey’s U.S. Attorney’s office says 30-year-old Simcha Bulmash of Brooklyn pleaded guilty Tuesday to traveling in interstate commerce to commit extortion.
Prosecutors say Bulmash and a group of conspirators met in an Edison warehouse Oct. 9 and discussed a plan to confine, restrain and threaten a man in an attempt to force him to grant his wife a “get” or religious divorce.
Bulmash and the others were arrested in an undercover sting in which an FBI agent contacted two rabbis seeking a divorce.
Several of those charged have pleaded guilty. The rabbis are awaiting trial.
Going over the GWB is interstate? Come on.
Punish them for what they did but not interstate?
I hope the 2 Rabbi’s are found not guilty.
After all they provided a very valuable service to Agunah cases where current secular law doesn’t offer a solution. It’s time Aguda gets legislation passed that when a Bais din tells a someone that he must give his wife a Get he gets jailed if he doesn’t listen to their Psak just like in Israel, this way no further measures would be necessary.
Simcha’s intentions were lashem shomiyim. He was only trying to help a women in need; unfortunately he depended too much on the rabbis’ validating the authenticity of the supposed women’s needs. At least he get to go home.
