Borough Park, NY – Kings County District Attorney Charles J. Hynes today announced the indictment of Yung Tang, 38, who is charged with using a homemade bomb, in an attempt to kill a tenant he wanted to evict from a commercial building, in 2002.

Charges against Tang include Attempted Murder in the Second Degree, Assault in the First Degree, Arson in the Second Degree, and Criminal Possession of a Weapon in the First Degree. He faces up to 50 years in prison.

On March 24, 2002, Israel Halberstam left his Borough Park home and noticed a bag next to the driver-side door of his minivan. When he attempted to kick the bag out of the way, it exploded. As a result of the incident, Halberstam lost his leg.

The indictment alleges Tang planted the bomb to kill Halberstam, because Halberstam owed Tang approximately $100,000 in unpaid rent, for commercial space, at 6508 6th Avenue. Halberstam used the space as a showroom for his electronics business.

Why did it take 6 years to get this far?
Was the landlord not a suspect before this at least in the victim's mind?

Yes, Halberstam deserves to be asked Mechilah from those who were sooooo quick to judge him. Instead of feeling sorry for a young man, a father, who unfortunately became disabled at such a young age and is unable to be there for his family the way he was able to before. We need to learn from this to never ever judge anyone. Maybe he made some unwise business decisions, which people do all the time. But to accuse him and to embarrass his family was not what Hashem would expect from us. Not only should we ask him Mechilah, but we need to try and see if there is anything we can do to help him and his family.

He actually was charged a while ago. At the time he confessed to the crime. But since then he was cought with another bomb in Connecticut, that case delayed the processing of his New York case. He is not a US citizen, and as soon as he finishes serving his 50 years he should get booted to wherever he came from.
