New York - The Thruway Authority and State Police Troop T are launching statewide seat belt enforcement initiative, "Buckle Up New York." The 14-day campaign will begin today, May 19 and continue until Sunday, June 1.
"While the vast majority of Thruway motorists wear their seat belts; Troop T will continue high-profile enforcement and education efforts such as Buckle Up New York until 100 percent compliance is accomplished," said Thruway Authority Executive Michael Fleischer.
Troop T, along with law enforcement across New York State, will staff safety restraint checkpoints and patrol the 570-mile New York State Thruway ensuring seatbelt compliance.
Drivers and front-seat passengers who are 16 years of age and older maybe fined up to $50 for failing to buckle up. Drivers who fail to have children properly secured may be fined $100 and receive three points on their license.
New York State Law requires that all front seat occupants must be properly secured, regardless of age; all rear seat passengers under 16-years of age must be properly secured; children under age 4 must be restrained in a federally approved child safety seat; children under age 4, but weighing more than 40 pounds, may be secured in a booster seat with a lap/shoulder safety belt; children ages 4, 5 and 6 must be restrained in an appropriate child safety seat or booster seat.
Children in this age group who are more than four-feet, nine-inches tall are exempt from this requirement.

Unfortunately, or fortunately we here in NYC we don’t need to be told …. They already exasperated and exploited the whole seatbelt thing here.. I’ve gotten 5-6 seat-belt summonses over the past 3-4 years , you won’t catch me without a seat belt! By the way : all it is; is a money maker here in my neighborhood (fltbsh)where people don’t drive more the 20mph with a light every 15 feet.

Even at 20 MPH a crash can do some major damage. Just imagine your head hitting the windshield at that speed. Or worse a child's head hitting the windshield. 75% of the children in physical rehab in Israel are there because they were not wearing a seat belt when in a car crash.
