49 year old Yehuda Honig was driving eastbound on Rockaway Turnpike at 3:48 PM on Wednesday afternoon when he slammed into a U.S. Customs and Border Patrol van that was turning left onto the Farmer’s Boulevard entrance to JFK Airport.

While the cars in the eastbound left and center lanes on Rockaway Turnpike stopped to allow the 2009 Ford van with its flashing blue and white flashing lights to make the left turn, according to Honig, who was driving in the far right lane, those two cars blocked his view of the van, giving him no more than three seconds before the actual moment of impact. The collision left the front left side of Honig’s black Lexus mangled and overturned the marked border patrol van.

As Honig called 911 to report the accident, the driver of the van began loudly berating him for running a red light. Footage from Honig’s dashcam shows that he had a green light at the time of the accident. The video also shows that the driver of the van made the left turn despite a traffic sign advising drivers that both left turns and u turns were illegal at that intersection.

“My head was spinning,” Honig told VIN News. “It is a miracle that I am alive.”

A copy of the police report obtained by VIN News lists the driver of the van as 47 year old Rudolph Lestage, who told police that he was driving to a job and that he thought that all oncoming traffic had stopped because of both the red light at the intersection and his flashing rooftop lights. Both cars had to be towed from the scene of the accident.

It wasn’t until Honig got home and reviewed the footage from his Timetec Road Hawk HD dashcam that he saw that he had not run a red light, despite claims that he had done exactly that by the driver and the van’s two passengers. Ironically, Honig had written a post on his website, dealspin.com, that very same day advising readers what to do in case of a traffic stop.

Honig reports that he has been improperly stopped and harangued on a few occasions by police, prompting him to install the dashcam just over a week before the accident.

“The power goes to their head sometimes and we need to provide some kind of accountability,” said Honig. “Some of these guys walk around like they own the place. They weren’t running to an emergency, so what business do they have making an illegal turn on city streets?”

Hmmm…. I’m no expert but maybe this cam reveals more than you care to show.

At the beginning you seem to be doing about 30 MPH as calculated by the street lines moving past you. From start to start, the lines are about 40 feet apart. At 1 to 2 line per second your doing about 30 to 35ish. Toward the end (just prior to the crash you seemed to have sped up and the lines moving past the camera seems to be about 2 to 3 lines per second resulting in something about 45 mph, maybe faster. Maybe a speed up to take advantage of a newly turned green light and get ahead of all that traffic on your left? Which brings up another issue, passing on the left. “Round-about-charlies” are a common occurrence in NYC, and when executed on the right may be illegal under the “yield to the left” rule. In NY, you may not pass a car on the right. Now, he may have run a no turning sign too, I dont know. But, you can be sure this video will be analyzed for speed and for how you passed the other cars.

the van had its lights on, but no siren. its a federal vehicle on a county road, so it must follow county law! without sirens, it was no better then a tow truck. this new crap that emergency vehicles are pulling not using their sirens(i guess it annoys the occupants) has got to end, and the driver should file federal charges against the officers in the van. they broke the law, and infringed on his constitutional protected right to freedom of travel, protection of personal property, and im sure much else. I am usually for law enforcement, but the complete lack of caring forthe driver is abominable!!

This camera appears to me to be high priced as I believe it only has a windshield view and not a driver and passenger view which is very important for false seatbelt and cellphone tickets the adr3000 is a better camera.

Also I don’t think the officer accused him for running a red light he asks him like didnt u see the light I think he meant his vehicle emergency lights I dont think he uses the word red light

I just bought a dashcam on Ebay for $20 shipped. It is decent.
The memory card is extra- I bought an 8gig micro-sd and use it in the camera with an adapter, so I can put it in my phone to watch the footage later.

You know who you are. We had an independant witness, a bochur waiting to cross at the light, who saw you slam into our car, but you persuaded the insurance company he was a plant. I don’t know how you did it, but all that ingenuity could be chaneled into making a positive difference instead of stealing from Yidden. YOU LIED to the cops & the insurance company. Money is only money. But you, young lady, your brother in law who owned the car, your just-as-stupid passenger friend – no, I do not meychel you. You deliberately lied & cost another Yid, my son on his way to Touro, 3 hours of aggravation & us, his parents, money to fix the car. This was back in November. I hope you can sleep easy at night – you are just as bad as any ganef breaking into a house. Except you pretend to be frum. I really wish we would have had a dash-cam, it would have proven what happened & backed up the bochur’s account. The good thing is : my son still has HIS integrity. You can never get yours back.
