The New York Post (http://bit.ly/1m8mxFi) reports some parents prefer the intimate service surrounded by family and friends that can take only as long at 15 seconds, as opposed to the medical procedure in the hospital that can take as long as 45 minutes and that uses medical instruments and anesthesia.

Rabbi Philip Sherman, a mohel who performs ritual circumcision for both Jewish and non-Jew alike, says he has seen a significant rise in requests from non-Jewish families to perform their bris – about 10 percent of his client base are outside of the Jewish faith.

A study performed by The American Pediatric Association shows that there has been a 10 percent decrease in U.S. circumcision over the past 30 years as more discussions arise as to the benefits of medical circumcision.

Dear fellow VINers, these people are not trying to be jewish. They don’t care about the religious aspect- this is no “bark mitzvah”. It was just saying that there are those who find that brisim have a medical benefit and they want their sons to have it as well. They used to go only to a hospital but now they sometimes employ a mohel to do the surgical aspect because is quicker, there is no anesthesia etc. these people don’t pretend they are jewish, they just like the idea of being surrounded by family and friends. They probably don’t do it on the 8th day either.

What about idiots like Shredready who insist that mohelim are less competent and more likely to cause harm than doctors? Is that only true for frum Jews?
