The New York Post (http://bit.ly/1iL7ReO) reports a memo sent to Police Commissioner Bill Bratton states that prosecution of small amounts of marijuana on those who have no prior criminal record wastes precious police resources. Only Class B misdemeanor possession of marijuana charges would apply.

A meeting to discuss the new policy with the upper-level NYPD officials is scheduled for Wednesday.

According to the memo, “more than two-thirds” of the Class B possession of marijuana charges processed by the Brooklyn DA’s office in 2013 were dismissed.

During Thompson’s campaign for DA, he promised voters that he would reduce criminal records by treating Class B misdemeanor charges of pot possession as violations, and that prosecuting small amounts of pot were wasting resources and diverting attention away from “violent crimes that are on the rise in Brooklyn.”
