Washington – New Documents Show Orthodox Jew Falsely Acused As Spy

Washington – For the past 11 years, Army tank engineer David Tenenbaum has been trying to undo the damage the government did to him in four days in 1997, when he was accused of being a spy for Israel.

It started with a polygraph test administered February 13, where one interrogator yelled epithets about how they knew how to deal with Jews. The next day, Mr. Tenenbaum arrived at work and found his computer gone and his name erased from the classified e-mail system at the Tank Automotive and Armaments Command in Warren, Mich.

He was then asked to enter a conference room, where agents from the FBI informed him he should confess to the crime of espionage. When Mr. Tenenbaum learned he would not be arrested, he walked out of the room and to his Toyota Camry parked on the base outside of Detroit. A guard asked him for his badge and proceeded to use it to scrape away the parking decal on his windshield.

Then the Jewish Sabbath came and the investigators he met in his office the day before began ransacking his home and confiscated this amateur violinist and guitarist’s music books as well as the coloring books that belonged to his 4-and-a-half-year-old daughter.

The ordeal was complete on the following Monday. Mr. Tenenbaum read in the Detroit Free Press that he was an alleged spy and learned later that the FBI had forgotten to seal the court request for the Eastern District Federal Court of Michigan asking for a search warrant of his home. Some newspapers even began to call him the next Jonathan Pollard, the Naval officer who was sentenced to life in prison for stealing technology for Israel in 1986.

new details emerged this week when an independent watchdog organization called the Project on Government Oversight published new internal documents relating to the Pentagon inspector general’s investigation into the handling of the Tenenbaum case.

Among the documents is a presentation laying out the inspector general’s findings. The presentation’s third slide says, “Mr. Tenenbaum experienced religious discrimination when his Judaism was weighed as a significant factor in the decision to submit him for an increase in his security clearance.”

Mr. Tenenbaum said he is not surprised that the military would try to suppress the report.

“For almost 12 years I have been fighting for justice,” he said. He added that many of the security officials he regards as his tormentors have been promoted in the military. Meanwhile, he is still seen as something of a pariah in his office. He is no longer allowed to work on his favored project of designing armor for Humvees. In the interim, he has earned a doctorate in chemical engineering.

“For 11 years I have been waiting for vindication,” he said. “You have to imagine this, I was wrongfully accused of espionage. The punishment is either death or life in prison. I believe the only worse crime is assassinating a U.S. president.” He went on: “My father was a Holocaust survivor. He was the only one who survived. He passed away a year before this happened. Can you imagine him seeing his only son being singled out for the same reason he was, being a Jew?”

According to a sworn affidavit of Mr. Tenenbaum, when he took his first polygraph test in 1997, his questioner said to him: “I have done other Jews before and gotten them to confess and I’ll get you to confess too,” and, “I can tell you are lying by looking into your eyes.”

Jewish community leaders and former Defense Department officials say Mr. Tenenbaum’s case represents a disturbing phenomenon.

Anti-semitism can rear its ugly head in all of golus; some countries are worse than others, but none is immune. Of course, a goy accused of spying (even if false) is probably going to be treated pretty poorly by the FBI and DOD investigators, also.

What of the new information? Is he finally being exonerated?

What is the significance of the missing “seal”?

Is it just that newspapers were free to publicly broadcast the false charges? Or does it mean there was a technical flaw that will cause all evidence allegedly obtained to be thrown out?

Has this innocent man been returned all of his property and his child’s property?

Were polygraph tests ever administered prior to that first one reported here?

Are polygraph interrogators trained by the FBI to lie about determining facts by looking into a person’s eyes? Does the FBI train interrogators how to profile an interrogation based on a person’s religion or race?

Malcolm Honelein stated on the Nachum Segal show that to this day the C.I.A and FBI refuses to hire jews because of racism and pure stupidity.

There are many jews that know different languages and can help the fight against terror but the dumb FBI and CIA hires many muslims!

America is a great country but stupid at the same time. Why do we hire people that took down buildings in NYC? You think we can trust these animals? When Meir Kahane was killed the dumb FBI and CIA had information about the WTC but sat on the stuff. There was noone to translate the stuff except a few muslims and these muslims that worked for the FBI lied about what the papers stated.

Nothing will change and it’s only a matter of time before we get attacked again and then we will have everyone screaming about “missing the signs”.

I do not trust muslims that work for the FBI or CIA.

This great country is not known as “AM REKA,” a shallow people for nothing. Hashem must really love them because they are so stupid. Look 33 years since the 1970’s oil embargo and nothing is done. Arabs take down buildings and planes and still the FBI and CIA kiss up to them. I was a Navy lawyer for three in the 1980 and I never heard of a Jewish naval NCO who fragged his CO but Arabs did in both Iraqi wars

Everyone who knows David Tennenbaum knew that the charges were false. David Tennenbaum is the most kind, really frum, ehrlich, straight and honest person that anyone could hope to know.

Your article speaks about how the FBI broke into his home and scared his wife and children. It doesn’t speak of how they partked outside his home for months and months and followed him everywhere – to the supermarket. He and his family have gone through a harrowing and horrifying experience. I would hope that the government would at the very least compensate him monetarily. He also spent a fortune on attorneys to help protect him.

I have known David since he was a young kid and I can tell you that everyone in the community loves him and was sick at what he was forced to go through. He is very much respected in the community even with these balogney trumped up charges hanging over him.

May Hashem bless him and his lovely wife and their wonderful children with only brochos and simchos from hereon.

It’s interesting that Pollard was a one time affair (Unless you want to go back 50 years to the Rosenbergs, and that’s still controversial.)

But if you check the ICE.GOV website their about one Moslem a month being caught for attempted terrorism, spying, weapons, actual attacks, etc. You would think they would learn, but…

I just want to say that I know David and he doesn’t have a mean bone in his body. He’s as honest and straightforward as they come. He once came to the school I work at and played guitar for the kids and got them all playing instruments in a mini-band. He is just a nice guy, a down-to-earth nice guy. They picked on a good man, a really good man, and it’s scary to think that they have the power to hurt people like David. May Hashem heal all sorrows, and may David and his family recover from this nightmare.
