Chomutov, Czech Republic - A new stone memorial to the Jews from Chomutov who influenced the town was unveiled by Israeli ambassador to the Czech Republic Yaakov Levy and Chomutov Mayor Ivana Rapkova.
Rapkova said most of Chomutov Jews had been deported to the Terezin ghetto during World War Two and subsequently to Nazi extermination camps.
Nazis also burnt down the local synagogue, she added.
There were hardly any survivors of the Holocaust in Chomutov, Rapkova said.
"Nothing but old cemetery recalls our former Jewish fellow citizens. However, it has gradually become desolated and covered by the grass. Its ancient tombstones have bent to the ground, the recollection of former disappeared neighbours became increasingly weak and pale," Rapkova said.
Most of the town residents did not even know where the old Jewish cemetery had been.
At present, it is only remembered by a big Magen David, she added.
