As the city’s transit officials haven’t raised fines in 20 years, they are eager to toughen the consequences for people who chose to smoke, vandalize, litter or commit any other offense on the subway.

NYC Transit President Howard Roberts said he thinks raising fines for fare-beating could deter further violations.

A source familiar with the situation said penalties for fare-beating could be raised from the current $60 to about $100.

It is reported fines for major violations such as vandalism, “harmful acts,” and having weapons or bombs could go up to $200.
