The incidents have all taken place in Stamford Hill, which is home to the largest Charedi community in Europe.
In one case, a 45-year-old Hebrew teacher was kicked and punched by two men who ripped off his shtreimel, causing it irreparable damage.
They did not search him, or demand anything from him, and ran off following the attack.
The hat is estimated to be worth around $5,000.
In an other incident a 50-year-old man was walking home when 19-year-old Peter Morris walked towards him and grabbed his shtreimel running off.
But a number of people were in the street at the time, and saw a man running off with the hat. They pounced on him and detained him prior to police arrival. The hat was recovered and returned.
Mr Morris was arrested and issued a fixed-penalty notice after telling police officers that he took the shtreimel when drunk as a dare and had not known it was of religious significance. Hackney Police had not originally classified the incidents as racially motivated.
There had been two other similar incidents the week before.
$5,000??? Why do people spend that kind of money on clothing???
i pre fur not wear one its too expensive thats why theives pre fur them
Rabosai, 30 years ago in Monsey a similar incident took place. An appeal was made on Shabbos in Chareidim (before it was Vayoel Moshe) and they collected “Reagan” Shtreimlich and Tish Beketchis and raincoats (not money). The cops patrolled the streets wearing the hassidic “uniforms” and two weeks later the thugs were caught after attacking one of the police officers wearing Shtreimlich. To all of us heimishe, it was a joke. We spotted those cops a block away – of course – no beards, and some had big moustaches, but to the thugs, they were looking for the hassidic uniforms – and they fell for it. 30 years later, I can say it has never happened again. So my London brothers, do the same! Hatzlocha.
They used Police masquerading as Chareidim to catch ATM robbers about 10 years ago. Worked a charm!!!
In Stamford Hill.
Shelo asani chussid.
Sheasani missnagged.
A hebrew teacher, could he actually afford a 5000 streimel? I think not.
PETA Activist? I can’t wait till they find out about the bais medresh on Rodney Street. They’ll splash some red paint on the oilum by shalasheedis, and the next favor that they do for animals will be feeding the fish under the Williamsburgh bridge. KY”R
the price of of shtreimel range between $700 – $5000 with an average of about $1200. Looks like the commenters here don’t wear shtreimlech
It could also be the animal rights activists who dont like to see fur on your head.
what a gangster doin with a shreimel….
he can add some bling to it…
How does a streimel have ‘religious significance’ unless your religion is Gelt?

Baruch Meshane Habruyot!
Maybe this is a sign from hashem that we are over extending ourself in cost of a simple head covering . Why 5000? thats a lot of dough. Im sure one can accomplish the same with a 1/4 of that!
If this is an attack by PETA then they should rather attack the Windsor Palace guards. They wear bear-fur hats that cost at least as much as a shreimel.
Many years ago in Lakewood when I was a kid there was a rash of beating on Fri. night (the perps knew it was Shabbos and we could not call the cops). A couple of cops dressed in suits and black hats and mingled with the Oilam walking home from Yeshiva to try and catch the attackers. We had to tell the cops not to smoke and how to say “Gut Shabbis”. Btw they did catch them.
