Brooklyn, NY - Mayor Mike Bloomberg has finally decided to visit Crown Heights. He has not had to visit, or promised to do so, in the past, but the situation (or at least the photo ops with community activists) warranted it.

At 12:00 p.m. today, Bloomberg will be arriving in Crown Heights, accompanied by NYPD Commissioner Ray Kelly, administration officials and a phalanx of local media. The mayor will be attending the 71st Precinct’s annual community parade and picnic, coming this year on the heels of a spike in violent crime, according to residents. A black man’s beating at a Lubavitcher’s hands was followed by an attack on a Lubavitcher teen by two blacks.

Dr. Tzvi (Harvey) Lang, Vice Chairman of the Crown Heights Jewish Community Council, asked to publicize the following notice: “There will be a lot of media present, and it’s important to show a giant presence at the event. Let’s make a Kiddush Hashem!”

The event will begin at 11:30 a.m. with the traditional parade down Empire Blvd., followed by the community picnic at Hamilton Metz Park  at Albany and East New York Aves., comprising children’s rides, a magic show, horse rides, and free kosher food.

Speaking on condition of anonymity, a Bloomberg official said that “the mayor will be coming because he cares and he wants to show up. There’s been a lot accomplished with meetings between city officials and police with regards to what’s happening in the neighborhood.”
