The three youths, Eyal Yifrah, 19, Gilad Shaar, 16, and Naftali Frenkel, disappeared Thursday night as they were heading home from a West Bank yeshiva.

The event was organized by the National Council of Young Israel, and Rabbi Avi Weiss of the Hebrew Institute of Riverdale and founder of Yeshivat Chovevei Torah, led the service. “Right to left across the political and religious spectrum, we stand as one with our brothers and sisters in Israel,” Weiss said.

The groups are also trying to popularize #BringBackOurBoys on Twitter, modeled on the #BringBackOurGirls social media effort that drew international attention to the plight of Nigerian school girls.

Jewish communities around the world have created prayer gatherings of their own, praying for the safe return of the three teenage boys.

Dear #1 , 3, 5. These are serious times. Can you give up your name calling and and finger pointing for even a little while?

Those who hate us do not care about religious beliefs. They hate us just the same.

Now more than ever we need to judge each other in a positive manner and practice ahavat chinam.

As a charedi I’m sorry to say that if he looked like us all charedim would have shown up and you know it. When it comes to Asra Kadisha, I guess the dead people garner more attention than the live korbonos.

Davening is great. How about some direct action defending ourselves and fighting back! You think the Arabs would not attack if 3 of theirs were kidnapped in Hebron? Let’s Go!

Immediately after this rally, some people in attendance discovered that there was a nearby rally for the kidnapped Nigerian girls. Quick action somehow resulted in Rabbi Weiss being the concluding speaker at that rally, too. In the words of Yeshivat Chovevei Torah student Jordan David Soffer on his Facebook page,

‘He spoke about our commitment to stand up for each other. The girls in Nigeria and the boys in Israel, he said, will never be found, unless every person in the world sees them as their brother, sister, daughter or son. G-d created man singularly, he preached in the name of the Talmud, so that no person can claim superiority over another human being.

We closed by singing a Carlebach niggun together. “Because of my brothers and friends, Because of my sisters and friends, Please let me ask, please let me sing, peace to you. This is the house, the house of the Lord, I wish the best for you”
    #bringbackourgirlsnyc #bringbackourboys’

What an amazing kiddush HaShem! I wish I could have been there in person.
