New York City - A Manhattan principal has warned parents to avoid walking their children to school near a troubled construction site where a worker died earlier this year.

Principal Mary Ann Sacco of Public School 183 on E. 66th St. sent home the letters because a crane at an adjacent construction site is the same type that collapsed last week, killing two workers.

"I encourage families to avoid First Ave. and travel via York Ave. when dropping off or picking up," she wrote.

Parents and children said they were relieved the principal was taking the issue so seriously and have long felt uneasy about construction at The Laurel, a luxury condo tower.

"We have to walk underneath that scary thing to get to school," said Allyson Lisser, a fifth-grader.

I wouldn't avoid kids who happened to have walked underneath a scary crane; I just might not walk with them!
