Albany, NY - Shelly Silver Vulnerable As He Is Confronting a Democratic Upheaval |
|

Albany, NY - - The speaker of the Assembly, Sheldon Silver, is confronting a democratic upheaval in his Lower Manhattan district, where he has wielded power with token opposition since the beginning of the Carter administration.
The talk around Albany is that the 64-year-old speaker is vulnerable. His Grand Street base is fading, replaced by a wealthier and more independent voting bloc that is less tolerant of his intrigues against the public interest, his obeisance to trial lawyers and public labor unions, and the staleness of his vision.
To a large degree, Mr. Silver’s staying power rests on the millions of dollars of pork he delivers to constituents every year, but the kingdom is coming under threat from a popular revulsion against the most famous symbol of Albany blight. Now, for the first time in two decades, Mr. Silver is running opposed.
Mr. Silver, who would prefer not to deal with the tiresome business of a primary, has the good fortune to be running against two opponents, a neighborhood activist, Paul Newell, and a corporate contract lawyer, Luke Henry
Mr. Silver is taking this race seriously. He’s marshalling the resources of the Working Families Party and, according to a source, has hired a legislative aide to conduct opposition research on Mr. Newell, but not on Mr. Henry. On Friday, his campaign blanketed the East Village with fliers announcing in three languages (English, Spanish, and Chinese) that Mr. Silver was setting up a mobile district office to hear constituent complaints.
Mr. Silver, of course, is no tyrant but an elected official who happens to play the political game better than anyone else. The question is just how good is he?

There is no question that based on Mr. Silver's past excellent record that his only concern is for the welfare of New York State residents and his own constiuency. Howver in our current political atmosphere, back office secret intrigue and no transparency in the political process is quite a dangerous path to follow. Mr. Silver, open your eyes as well as your process.

Shelly is the only one with the strength to fight against the garbage bloomberg tries to shove down our throats.
We all need to unite and make sure everyone that can vote for him does so.
He will not be unemployed if he didnt win. He is still an attorney.
It is the constituents that would be in trouble without him to stand up for us.

Yeah lets not forget that Shelly is the one that blocked yeshiva tax credit that Gov Pataki proposed in the budget due too the teachers union.
So Shelly thinks first about his politics and then about us.
Time for change!!!

When will we finally be able to make a Baruch Sheptoraney from Shelly Silver..It's about time someone retire him so he can spend more time on his golf game.
Let's not get to attached to "Rabbi" Levin..in this day and age he's an ASSkin....in days of yore he would have been called a KOCHLEFEL

So do his two opponents stand for what everything Frum yiddin? Would you be better off with them? Are not they liberal as well? Does Shelly only represent Frum yiddin or are there others also that he represents? Silver has helped his neighborhood over the years and has done a great job for New York standing up for everyone not just Frum yiddin

We'd be better off with anyone but Silver. For a shomer Shabbos to vote for gays and against Yeshivohs is a massive chillul haShaim. His arrogance GAIVAH has no bounds. Hopefully someone who cares about haimishe issues will replace him. Good riddance!

Can i point out that when Silver votes he is voting on behalf of the majority of the NYS Assembly. Not for himself.
No one seems to understand that . Even when he voted against congestion pricing everyone applauded but they didnt realize it is Silver AND the majority of the members of the assembly. So if he voted for the gays and or something else, it is not him speaking out for himself only.
Learn how politics works folks!!!

Boy are you people ignorant. You dont even realize how much the Jewish community in NY has benefited from silver. Whether its kosher laws or hatzoloh or the countless other issues he has faught for on our behalf you should be thanking him not speaking badly about him.
Its obvious that some of you are so jealous that just because someone else is a big player around here you get upset because you arent.
Go do something positive with your lives and stop spewing your garbage because I am sure that you will never be able to do as many great things for our community as silver has done.

Silver is a fair-weather friend to the frum community--he does it all for political gain. He will be replaced by like-minded liberals but, being new, they will have little power to enforce their personal agenda.
