Zugibe spoke at length for thirty minutes about various topics, including the great strides that have been taken on a county level on behalf of all victims of sexual abuse. The district attorney described the unique challenge of forging bonds within the Chasidic community and said that his office has endeavored to create a level of trust that will encourage Chasidic crime victims to come forward and seek justice.

The district attorney had sharp words for anyone who might try to prevent others from reporting a crime, warning that would-be intimidators would find themselves in trouble with the law.

Zugibe promised to come down strongly on anyone who attempts to interfere with the judicial process. “If we have evidence that somebody is engaging in that kind of conduct, we are going to prosecute them for that.”

The district attorney noted that the problem of not reporting incidents of sexual abuse is not unique to the Jewish community and defended his office’s handling of two high profile New Square abuse cases.

Zugibe blasted the News 12 special report which suggested that his office is lenient with defendants in exchange for political gain and said that much misinformation has been spread regarding the New Square abuse cases by those who are looking to play on people’s prejudices.

Zugibe defended his handling of the Herschel Taubenfeld case, criticizing those who say justice wasn’t served.

Zugibe scoffed at the allegation that New Square defendants often walk away with a mere slap on the wrist, noting that to date, only two abuse cases have come out of New Square.
