Manhattan, NY – CAMERA Ups The Ante Against NY Times; Equates Paper To Hamas In Times Square Billboard

Manhattan, NY – The Committee for Accuracy in Middle East Reporting (CAMERA) has upped the ante in pressuring the New York Times to call a cease-fire in what it calls “biased” attacks against Israel by equating the paper to Hamas in the latest installment of its Times Square billboard.

On its website, CAMERA.org (http://bit.ly/1cvx5qf) the watchdog outlet includes a photo of the new billboard which sits directly across from the New York Times Manhattan offices.

“Hamas attacks Israel: Not surprising.” the top section of the banner reads with a missile placed beneath the quote, followed by “The New York Times attacks Israel: Also not surprising.” in the second half, accompanied by a picture of a pen.

“With Times coverage of the Arab-Israeli conflict continuing to include numerous material errors and promoting a distorted picture of the region, we continue our campaign to raise awareness about the newspaper’s lack of credibility,” the CAMERA website states about the ad.

This is the third installment aimed at the TIMES on the billboard since it first made its debut, the first asking “Would a great newspaper slant the news against Israel?” followed by the answer; “The New York Times does.”

Back in May the billboard was updated to include the controversy around the Times’ firing of editor Jill Abramson, reading “Unfair to Jill Abramson? Defintely unfair to Israel.”

Each incarnation has also included bold red lettering reading “Stop the Bias.”

Before listing specific instances of anti-Israel bias by the Times, the CAMERA website states, “These examples are part of a pattern of bias. CAMERA’s six-month study of New York Times coverage of the conflict between Palestinians and Israel found that the newspaper consistently treats Israel with a harsher standard, omits context, and shows a clear preference for the Palestinian narrative.”

I hate to break it to CAMERA, but there are still a few outlets of journalism in this country. Unfortunately, our news outlets have largely devolved into biased propaganda sources and we self-select the ones we choose to read. Some of them specialize in biased semi-fiction (Newsmax), some of them specialize in carefully-selected factual news that suits their agenda (RawStory with its daily Palestinian civilian death count but never a word about Hamas atrocities). If you agree 100% with your news source, then it is NOT reporting everything. Unless you have the time to read sources from all perspectives (DailyStar in Lebanon is a good paper, AlJazeera America, BBC) you are missing a piece of the puzzle. No one is perfect, no one side in a conflict is without any fault. Criticize the Times if you like with factual documentation to prove their errors, but it is still the best paper in the country and pointing out Israel’s flaws and mistakes is hardly anti-Israel. It is the truth and we should never shield ourselves from the truth. If Israel or Jews do something wrong, we need to know and then we need to make sure to correct the situation.

The only way to get the Times to stop its biased reporting is to hit it in the pocketbook. Stop reading the NY Times, stop reading its website, and, more importantly, pressure the advertisers to stop advertising. This has been suggested before, but nobody does anything about it.

did you see Kerry’s interview on FOXNEWS where he blasts Israel – supposedly off the microphone, but it was recorded “by mistake”

CAMERA is ridiculous. The majority of news sources these days are far far note biased than the NY Times – while nobody is perfect, they remain fact based and mostly neutral. CAMERA’s problem is that they can’t tolerate anything negative about Israel – even if true. What an embarrasment.

Sometimes the NYT articles seem to present what could be considered a negative picture of Israeli actions and sometimes a very positive one.. That’s life. Neither the Israelis nor the NYT are infallable. There certainly isn’t a more serious paper in the New York area. The Post and Daily News should be boycotted by all Yiddin due to their daily barrage of gratuitious photos of scantilly cald women. And to top it off there is nothing newsworthy about those photos.

CAMERA is doing a wonderful job in publicly telling the NY Times over and over again of their biased reporting as it relates to Israel..

We should send money to CAMERA so that they can continue bringing the anti Israel bias of the many news organizations to the public. CAMERA is a 501(c)3 and the contribution is tax deductible.

Why do you people give so much credit to the NYT. Years ago when I commuted to and from work on the subway everybody read the NYT. When was the last time you saw someone, anyone, reading the Times. Everybody has in their hands an iphone playing a game, listening to music or going through their texts or whatever but nary a newspaper in sight, except perhaps the freebees AM and Metro.
