New York - New York lawmakers have approved legislation to extend low-cost health insurance to volunteer firefighters and ambulance workers.

The law's sponsors say allowing volunteer companies to access the health insurance plans offered to municipal employees will lower coverage costs for members, especially those providing needed service in rural areas and suburbs.

The measure, under review by Gov. David Paterson, would take effect in 180 days.

Lawmakers say there are no fiscal implications since the volunteer participants will bear the cost.

Not everyone is a Boro Park wana be, with a light bar and a walkie talkie and big key ring. My son is a Volunteer firefighter, he has taken numerous courses and certified as a trainer, haz-mat tech, EMT & has attained the rank of Captain in the dept. He spends more time in the FD than on his personal life. This will be of great help.

As a volunteer firefighter I say that it's about time our efforts are recognized and appreciated.
As for hocker's remarks, it is sad that organizations that started off as great accomplishments (except shomrim who are of the lowest form of the human species) ended up as such embarrassments to their founders.
Thankfully volunteer firefighters are only concerned in public safety without all the garbage i.e. radios, lightbars and sirens. We follow the letter of the law in that regard unlike all those "emt" "vas" and other lowlifes.

If you have any questions about the laws regarding the use on emergency lighting and sirens read the DMV laws pertaining to that.

Yes, because we have never heard of a volunteer firefighter embezzling money or setting fires so that they have something to play with.

It is not about the lights and sirens, but rather the few who abuse it. I agree, go after them, but don't lump us all together. The fact remains, which you all forget, is that if your family member is having a heart attach, you don't want us sitting in traffic with a green light hoping someone gets out of our way. You want us there as soon as possible, and event then it is not fast enough. How quickly those with big mouths and small brains forget!!!!
