Borough Park, NY - Dov Hikind, a grandfather of Orthodox Jewish politics in New York, appears to be turning his back on some of his closest political kin with his endorsements this season.

Hikind, a Democratic state assemblyman from the 48th district of the Boro Park section of Brooklyn, has spent years overseeing the work of younger Orthodox politicians, including two former chiefs of staff, Simcha Felder and David Greenfield. Each of these two men is stepping out on his own but has found himself without Hikind’s backing.

In Greenfield’s race for New York City Council, Hikind has backed Greenfield’s opponent, Joe Lazar. In the state Senate race for which Felder is vying, Hikind has given his support to the incumbent, Kevin Parker.

The Orthodox Jewish community of Brooklyn has long been seen as a relatively unified bloc, but the schisms between Hikind and his protégés suggests fault lines that could present a dilemma for voters in the primary September 9.

“Younger people want to take the place of older people,” said Hank Sheinkopf, a consultant in New York Democratic politics, referring to political up-and-comers Felder and Greenfield. “There is a generational shift of power in this town. There’s no question about it.”

Hikind has downplayed his endorsements in both races, saying they were primarily questions of timing rather than allegiance — and some analysts said that horse-trading is a normal part of the political process. But a few New York political insiders said there are signs that the endorsements may come out of Hikind’s struggle to retain his political influence.

Michael Fragin, a Republican Jewish campaign operative, said that during recent years, Hikind endorsed a number of candidates who later went on to lose their races. Fragin also said that despite Hikind’s endorsement of Senator Hillary Clinton in the presidential primary, the lowest turnout in Brooklyn was in Hikind’s assembly district.

Another New York consultant, who knows both candidates, said that Hikind may be in fear of Felder’s rise.

“Now you have this interesting thing happening where Hikind would always protect Simcha, almost like a mother protecting one of her cubs, and now the cub is grown up and is taking on the mother,” the consultant said.

According to Ezra Friedlander, CEO of the New York public relations firm Friedlander Group, Felder and Hikind were long like “Batman and Robin.” Friedlander said that to the best of his knowledge, that close working relationship remains.

“Assemblyman Hikind and I have worked together for many years to serve the community, and we are going to continue to do so,” Felder told the Forward.

Hikind said he endorsed Parker, a black senator who presides over a large black and Caribbean population in the district, long before he knew that Felder was running for the State Senate.

“It is based purely on a commitment I made,” Hikind said of his support for Parker. “If I had known Simcha had been running in the beginning, of course I would’ve supported him.”

so what who cares
felder thinks and increase in $25 for blocking the box is wrong and like using people as a cash machine but at the same time he has no problem pushing a $1000 fine for feeding the birds. that is mighty inconsistent

Dov,
Perhaps its time for you to persue a career in fund raising or talk radio and leave politics to the new guys. We need ***CHANGE***.

Not a ringing endorsement for Parker

"of course" why? cuz he's frum? Hikind is endorsing parker... over kendall stewart and felder. Parker is the incumbent. the community is many many people besides the frum people of midwood. and how has parker not been good until now?

Dov publicly announced his dislike for Parker at the Agudah Dinner...

Hikind was one of the guest speakers Wednesday night addressing Agudath Israel of America, a Jewish group based in downtown Manhattan that regularly hosts meetings with elected officials. According to an attendee there, Hikind referred to Parker as “a farce and a joke” and “he said he is going to unseat him this year.”

Lets be frank bottom line is none of these guys do too much of anything for the community. The garbage trucks are out this morning with the school buses - where is Simcha to direct traffic.

I don't even know how long Dov is in office - but where are the universal school vouchers for all yeshiva students. Dov are you too busy licking Shelly Silver's boots?

He took down my information and he got back to me the next day with a contact person who helped my greatly.

SENATOR PARKER!! YOU HAVE MY VOTE!!

Simcha sold his sole to Bloomberg and political correctness when wishing to optain higher office. Dov always has had the guts and conviction to do right for the community, even if it means standing up to hios protoge.
Hikind endorses Lazar..because hes good for the community..end of story

what exactly has simcha done? i'm not mocking him, i'm just curious. BTW, i'm not interested in his 'quality-of-life' BS, like feeding the pigeons

and to be fair to hikind, the last sentence in the article much makes the rest of the article make no sense. Hikind said " “If I had known Simcha had been running in the beginning, of course I would’ve supported him.”

Simcha originally was planning to run for city-wide office "comptroller" & then changed his mind & hikind already endorsed this guy.

who know the truth. either way, article makes no sense. a real &*(^ disturber. that's it

Dov Hikind should retire and make way for the new chevra. We need people like Ezra Friedlander in government. Not Joe Lazar who hasn't lived even ONE DAY in our community.

21

Jun 20, 2008 at 11:40 AM Moshe Says:

The reason that Simcha Felder is supporting David Greenfield is because David has the exact experience that is needed to be an excellent Councilman. That should be the ONLY criteria for supporting elected officials. Similarly, Simcha is far and away the best candidate for Senate. GO SIMCHA GO!

22

Jun 20, 2008 at 11:45 AM BoroParker Says:

Joe Lazar was retired for years and spending his time in Florida before Dov forced him to move back to Brooklyn. We don't need someone who isn't motivated in the city council. Change is good.

23

Jun 20, 2008 at 11:57 AM Mechel Says:

Dov is being dishonest. He promised Stewart his support and then switched to Parker. Why can't he switch to Felder? Because he doesn't want him to win. He's afraid of Simcha!

Lets get real.. both Dov & Simcha were great... but if I have to pick one its Dov hands down.. "Change" is a keyword for dumb liberals, not heimishe yidden

AaronLeib Says: Dov Hikind should retire and make way for the new chevra. We need people like Ezra Friedlander in government. Not Joe Lazar who hasn't lived even ONE DAY in our community.

HAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!!!!!!!! did someone pay you to write junk like this........ Joe Lazar grew up on 16th avenue in Boro Park & lived on L & E 9th (also in the 44th CD) for half of his married life.. you can attack him for having too much experience helping our community...

As far as Felder goes, he duped our community into bankrolling an election that he had no shot at. Now he decides to throw his hat into an election at the last minute... Is this seat really worth the close to two million $$$ that we gave him??? & can he really win it??? Is Simcha being genuine on this, or will we hear that he is running for mayor next week???

"two former chiefs of staff" was Greenfield there long enough to put that on his resume??? He spent millions of sephardic dollars & accomplished nothing!!! He's made a mockery of their community and now he wants to do the same to ours!!! taking credit for things that he had NOTHING to do with!!!

Our community has spent years building bridges with other communities & as a result, we have reaped tremendous benefits. A religious jew is the speaker of the assembly!!! I'm not sure our community understands what that means!!! & we have incredible relationships w/ the black, hispanic, and asian communities.

Some would have us force the arm of the legislature or turn our back on the democratic(almost) majority in Senate (for a seat we cannot win) because David is an egomanic & simcha is out of a job...

WE HAVE A LOT TO LEARN!!!

Im a local business owner in Boro Park and I have contacted both Simcha Felder's and Dov Hikind's offices over the years. I have always been impressed by the professionalism and attentiveness of their staffs who have helped me on numerous occasions. I have never heard of Mr. Greenfield but Mr. Lazar is someone I have met at some events, but I am sure it will be an interesting race. Why would I trust a no name newspaper on this story, which was probably written to cause sensationalism over nothing and never has any positive stories about the frum community. I have no respect for people who comment on issues they don't know anything about to reporters just to make a name for themselves.

Joe Lazar is a modern-orthodox guy who doesnt represent our community. He wears a "suede" yarmulke in Flatbush and a "velvet" yarmulke in BoroPark. That's just sad.

Truth isn't being so truthful. Greenfield is recognized throughout New York for leading the charge to help parents get millions in government funding to help pay for yeshiva tuition. His achievements are nothing short of historic. I understand if you like someone else better then him but don't distort the "truth."

Mr. Yeshiva Man, I appreciate the help, but that’s not my problem... I keep on hearing about this $ 600 mill that going to help our community pay for private school... My problem is that this legislation DID NOT recognize private schools... this is a junk piece of legislation that Greenfield can gladly take credit for, considering that w/o it he’s a big nobody who’s exploiting the sephardic community out of $$$!!!

I don’t want to hear that he really wanted something else because the fact is this is what he got!!! Thank you Mr. Greenfield for shearing all of our money w/ the rest of the city (since we’re seeing less than 10 mill of that)… instead of pushing through something that can actually work, he got us nothing… all that other stuff that he takes credit for is NOT his

But theres an article out from last week that says felder says that hikind supports him indeed.
what gives?

41

Jun 22, 2008 at 11:28 AM AlbanyInsider Says:

Shelly doesn't support any funding for parents of yeshiva children. He opposed all tax credits. The only reason that this $600 million legislation passed is because Greenfield and his coalition pushed it through the legislature. Basically, they built so much support for the legislation that Shelly had no choice but to pass it. I know because I worked in the Capital when this happened.

Jun 23, 2008 at 09:44 AM Non - Albany Insider Says:

To Albanyinsider - you must have been working in a different capitol. Teach NYS was opposed to the tax credit legislation. On the contrary, they fought against its passage. You can't have it both ways. You can't oppose legislation and then take credit for its passage. If you really worked in the capitol (firstly you'd have spelled it right), you would have known that every legislator was lobbied against the bill by Teach NYS. It's time that Mr. Greenfield owns up to what he has really accomplished. NOTHING!

He did not get tuition tax credits, which is what he spent hundreds of thousands of dollars in Teach NYS money to lobby for

He has alienated virtually every elected official, outside of those that he has been buying with his Sefardy money

He has pitted Agudath Israel against the Catholic Church, because Agudah didn't agree with his strong-armed tactics

He is trying to marginalize anyone not in his camp and build up those whom he has bought

He compares his stature with Simcha's as being Hikind's Chief of Staff, and not getting his support, when he was fired by Hikind, unlike Felder, who was a competent chief of staff

He is trying very hard to create a split in the frum community by using Simcha Felder, one of his purchased backers, to go against Dov Hikind. Simcha and Dov have worked well together for years on behalf of this community. The last year has seen an un-natural split. The only difference a year has made is David's appearance on the scene. Simcha has done so may strange things in the last year vis-a-vis the community,

from a real estate deal opposed by every segment of the community, except for Simcha's Sefardy real estate backers

to congestion pricing

to increased fees and taxes for his community

that can only be explained by his new found relationships.

It's time the truth be told

44

Jun 23, 2008 at 03:02 PM AlbanyInsider Says:

The truth is that you obviously don't like David. That's okay. What's not okay is lying about facts.

The fact is that without Greenfield there would be no $600 million tax credit. Of course, it wasn't EXACTLY what he originally wanted. But nobody gets EXACTLY what they want in Albany. Greenfield's legislation is the biggest achivement for the frum community in 40 years.

The fact is that Simcha & Dov had a falling-out based on POLITICS not personality. Dov want to be king of the Jews and Simcha has earned his place as a serious community leader on his own.

The fact is that Greenfield has nothing to do with real estate deals, congestion pricing, and taxes. Well that last one isn't actually correct. Greenfield has something to do with taxes: he is the only one that has cut yeshiva parents' taxes in the history of the frum community.

Finally, I've been working in Albany for years. The other groups talk a lot, but get little done. Greenfield talks little but gets a lot done. We need more people like him in Government.

Those are the FACTS.
