A spokesperson for Anonymous stated the plan seems to have originated with the group’s North American and European members.
Israel has seen a wave of cyber-attacks recently started by hackers from the Middle East, South America and Asia who support “OpSaveGaza,” a hacker campaign backed by Anonymous targeting Israeli government websites. They have temporarily taken down the Israeli defense ministry site and the Tel Aviv police department’s site.
Recent cyber-attacks began in early July. An Anonymous spokesperson claims that “thousands” of Israeli websites were attacked. A report last week from The International Business Times stated that various Israeli pages were replaced with graphics, slogans and audio files.
Hacker group “AnonGhost” has claimed responsibility for the recent attacks. An Anonymous spokesperson says AnonGhost is associated with Anonymous, but AnonGhost denies any association.
Anonymous has been launching cyber-attacks against Israel for several years – the group claims it has been launching Israeli government attacks for over four years. They launched the #OpIsrael campaign against military and civilian sites in 2012, and claimed to have attacked 100,000 websites in April 2013.
