“Today … we are not flying to Israel,” Delta CEO Richard Anderson said in an interview with CNBC.

His comments come a day after air carriers in the United States and Europe on Tuesday halted flights to Tel Aviv as turmoil in Israel and the region intensified.

The German airline Lufthansa is also extending its suspension of flights to Israel for another 24 hours, to include Thursday, saying there was not enough new information as to the situation there to justify resuming flights.

Lufthansa and other major U.S. and European airlines had suspended flights for Tuesday and Wednesday as turmoil in Israel and the region intensified.

The suspension affects all flights carried out by Lufthansa Group airlines – Lufthansa, Germanwings, Austrian Airlines, Swiss and Brussels Airlines. Lufthansa said 20 flights had been planned for Thursday.

And the Polish state airline LOT has suspended its flights to Israel from Warsaw until Monday because of concern for passengers’ safety, the airline’s spokeswoman said on Wednesday.

“This is caused by the tense situation in the region,” LOT added in a statement. “The connection will be re-established as soon as possible and when we are sure that our operations are hundred percent safe.”

Congratulations and appreciation to British Airways for not following the herd and capitulating to the hysteria – both BA flights into Tel Aviv on July 22 left London. The morning flight today [7/23] has already left London and the evening flight is scheduled as normal. And as they say what goes in must come out so the return trips from Tel Aviv to London are also operating! BA – thank you.

All of these airline companies are “fair weather friends”. The fact of the matter is that during the Vietnam War, Ton Son Nhut Airport in Saigon was constantly hit by rocket fire. Yet, the FAA never banned any commercial US carriers from flying into Saigon during the Vietnam War. I think that Obama decided to punish Israel indirectly, by hitting it in the pocketbook with the FAA ban. The FAA is under the U.S. Dept. of Transportation. The Secretary of Transportation is appointed by the President, and serves at his pleasure. Do I have to spell it out any more?

This is their way of putting pressure on the Israeli Government. ” see! we can’t force you to stop hurting those poor innocent terrorists whom you warn ahead of time. But we can put financial pressure by destroying your tourism”.

There is no fault to be found with the airlines on this. Who wants to be the guy who signs off on flights and has to explain himself after a disaster? In aviation, safety first.

(Really BA is still flying? So the Brits have not published a prohibition? Bold move.)
