Brooklyn, NY - A 49-year-old mental patient waiting for a bed in Kings County Hospital fell out of a chair and died an hour before anyone came to check on her, the Health and Hospitals Corp. said.

HHC President Alan Aviles ordered the suspension or termination of six hospital employees involved in the "serious incident." They included staff directly responsible for the patient's care as well as managers of security and clinical services.

HHC said the unidentified woman was brought to the hospital's Psychiatric Emergency Department suffering from "agitation and psychosis." She refused medical review but was involuntarily admitted. She was put in a chair to wait for a bed to become available in the inpatient unit.

A preliminary investigation determined the woman fell from the chair to the floor and stayed there for an hour before she got any medical attention, HHC said. She was unresponsive when help came. "We all are shocked and distressed by this situation," Aviles said in a statement. "What our investigation so far determined violates the basic principles of the compassionate health care practiced every day at Kings County and across our public hospital system. "We express our deep regrets to the patient's family and will ensure a thorough investigation to answer any questions that remain."

I may be wrong, but I think Yankel Rosenbaum died here because of unchecked wounds and R"L bled to death.

Yes, Yankel Rosenbaum did die under these circumstances in mylocal hospital. It's not fit to treat dogs. Fat, lazy, uncaring, gospel-singing, illiterate "nurses". And that's on a good day.

as for the "distressed" HHC president...who's he kidding? what's one dead lunatic? The world's a better place with one less crazy, right?

Disgusting!

"...basic principles of the compassionate health care.."
In 1991, during the Crown Heights Riots, Yankel Rosenbaum had been stabbed several times by Limerick Nelson (YM'S). When Yankel was brought into Kings County Hospital he was still alive. Two or three stab wounds in his back went unnoticed by the hospital staff and Yankel died.

Can I just point out that not all blame should go to KCH, blame should also be placed on the ambulance crew who transported them. Checking the body for bleeding is a critical part of the patient assessment, and should have been completed when he was placed on a backboard.
