Albany – Saying that New York Governor Andrew Cuomo is now “looking as bad as the forces he likes to attack,” the New York Times on Wednesday published a scathing editorial, saying Cuomo reneged on his promise to “root out” corruption in Albany.

In their NYTIMES.com (http://nyti.ms/1nwtQsb) editorial titled “Gov. Cuomo’s Broken Promises,” the Times points out the hollowness of Cuomo’s 2013 promises that his newly appointed Moreland Commission to Investigate Public Corruption would be “totally independent” and have the leverage of subpoena power to look into any office or elected official in the state.
“Anything they want to look at, they can look at — me, the lieutenant governor, the attorney general, the comptroller, any senator, any assemblyman,” Cuomo stated back in July of last year.
Now, the editors point out, a report issued by the New York Times reveals that “behind the scenes, Mr. Cuomo’s office quickly began working to stop the commission from digging into any operations that might affect the governor or taint his image,” culminating in Cuomo’s “abrupt shutdown of the commission in March.”
The editors take issue with Cuomo’s “it’s my commission. I can’t ‘interfere’ with it because it’s mine” response to the Times report, and openly back U.S. attorney for the Southern District of New York Preet Bharara’s decision to take the case over, saying “Mr. Cuomo’s administration should make sure it has turned over every document relating to the Moreland fiasco.”
In conclusion, the editors write, “It’s not just Mr. Bharara’s job to clean up Albany. It is up to the voters to decide whether to go on endorsing business as usual.”
Sparring liberals. I love it!
Lets hope they nail him!
Governor Cuomo never promised to uproot bi partisan corruption, just the corruption that the other party does. I guess that means the Republicans aren’t adept at making political franchises as the Democrats.
Oh I am so sorry that Cuomo is a disappointment for you liberals at the NYT and WNYC. I guess he is not as progressive as the great Mayor De-Blassio and city council speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito. Cuomo is too much to the center for Mr. Brian Lehrer. After all he supports charter schools and pension reform against our lovely , just, uncorrupt, law abidding unions. Only the progressives at the WFP are straight. Every one else is corrupt.
Henceforth, lets try to find shmutz on Cuomo.
When they get to Ramapo, lots of things will hit the fan. Everyone is on the take and the takers will be convicted.
The Times will be on the attack through the September Democratic primary. They are joining the push for Teachout.
