President Evo Morales already broke off diplomatic relations with the Jewish state in 2009, calling Israel’s treatment of Palestinians “a genocide.”

The action announced Wednesday will especially hit young Israelis, who often travel for extended periods, with South America a popular destination.

Other South American countries, including Brazil, Chile, Ecuador and Peru, have recalled their ambassadors from Israel in protest over the fighting in Gaza.

Coming from a country with such an honest criminal justice system, this action is slightly hypocritical. Two-bit Bolivia–where the no-showering law of the 9 days is observed the entire year.

Bolivia has a long norm of being insular in every sense of the word. They just don’t like outsiders. (I thought I needed a visa as an American last time I was there.)

The United States does not have formal relations with Bolivia which is one of the reasons it was impossible for the US Govt to free Yankel Ostreicher. The U.S. does not maintain a formal embassy there (no ambassador); just a charge d’ affaires; the last ambassador was expelled by the Bolivian government in 2008. Last I checked, there wasn’t a long line of tourists waiting to visit Bolivia, visa or no visa!
