The driver Mr. Avraham G. 30, had ten passengers in the back of his Volvo S70, two women with babies on their laps and six children under the age of 10 half-seated or standing up.

The problem is that this is very common among frum people. I've seen 21 bochurim squeezed into a 10 passenger van. Besides being illegal it is extremely dangerous and there have been many fatalities is such situations. It is only Bichasdei Hashem that there aren't too many such insidents in our communities.

Where I live, to see 13 "shchoirim" in a compact car, or 6 mexicans in the front seat of a pickup (with another 16 in the bed of the truck) is the norm. But when you see a heimishe yid, it makes world news.
I guess we need to remember that we are bnei milochim and we are all held to a higher standard. If for no other reason other than the goyim are jealous, hence antisemish.

You sound like one of those people who call every traffic cop who give a yid a ticket, an anti semite.

13 people in a car is a interesting story. Jew or not. Period.

Whoever is familiar with the BBC knows that if a Jew would scratch the finger tip of a Muslim they would make headlines of it and will not shut up on their radio station!! but if a Muslim would blow himself up in an Israeli mall killing 15 Jews they won't spend on it more then 1/2 a minute

It never ceases to amaze me about the ignorance of so many people that are saying the BBC are anti semetic. This story would have made the same headlines if it were a muslim or what ever. the bottom line is, it is bizarre and thats why it is garnering attention

Apart from the fact that this was most dangerous & stupid thing to do, it reminds me of the time me & my Bochurim friends in the UK crammed into a Mini...arms, legs & heads out of the doors & windows, gear stick digging into rear ends, faces squished into the windshield etc. I think the record was about 16 of us.

Of course,we had more sense than to DRIVE!! Maybe this was also a record-breaking attempt?

Jun 24, 2008 at 05:00 PM schlemazel Says:

We know the family who did this, they are no different to all of us, good caring people who have served the kehilla (by being melamdim) through their generations. We took a trip, very elderly gr.parents in the back on the laps of the teens, the 11-12 yearolds squeezed on top with their feet out of the car, had to open the windows to fit us all in, how else does a frum family go on a chol hamoed outing? We drove very carefully. I just read a survey that nealy 100% of participants said they have driven under the influence of drugs - goim! I think we are a lot safer, because we love our family and it takes a lot of love to fit them all in the car with joy. You should hear the humour along the way.

Are you equating a yid with them? do they learn pirkei avos? do they have minhagim that are meant to enhance the kavod habriyos that we do? are we to emulate them? if they do something, does that mean we can do those things too? where's darkei ho'amori? Yes, they can do it and no, we cannot do it. And yes the news media is right in pointing this out to us. We should answer to a higher standard.

European countries are very strict about passenger car occupancy rates in car. If a car is certified for 5 people, police will give a hefty fine for each passenger over the limit. Not to mention seat belts for all occupants, even in the back.

Yes, it's a big tircha for the yidishe communities, but safety comes first!

My personal opinion is that the BBC is not wrong for making this some Headline News. Come to think about it, IT IS realllly pathetic!!! Despite the fact that it's against the law, what about 'Ushmartem Es Nafshosaichem', for your own safety and the safety of your family??? However, I do feel that second clip was totally irrelevant. I think we all got the point without that exaggerated demonstration.

54

Jun 25, 2008 at 12:12 AM the truth Says:

This guy stated that he really wanted to call a cab but.........

The real truth is that this chosid was to cheap and cared more about saving 5.00 than his entire family. It really is amazing how people would rather put their entire families life in danger in order to save five to ten dollars.

This is not just happening in London but happening all over NYC.

I live in Monsey and saw many people going up to the mountains with overloaded cars.

Of course when a state trooper will pull a yid over for driving like a meshuganeh some people will open their big mouth and call the state trooper an anti semite for protecting citizens of NYS.

Shame on anyone that tries putting their 13 children in a car that fits 5!

if only we can have a law in the United States which would bar anyone from driving for 5 years if caught driving while talking on a cell phone
and/ or driving with an overloaded car.

55

Jun 25, 2008 at 01:30 AM Anonymous Says:

You have a large number of unsecured people in a vehicle that will be moving fast.

If that vehicle should stop suddenly (either because it hit something, or to avoid an accident) the momentum has to go somewhere.

Unlike passengers who are safely in seat belts, loose passengers are going to continue to move forward at 60 miles an hour until they hit something, crushing small children between multiple adults and the ceiling or seats in front of them.

Loose children in the front seat would either hit the windshield at that velocity, or by smashed by the airbags which are designed to protect a single adult sitting in a seat.

56

Jun 25, 2008 at 08:05 AM Anonymous Says:

After reading 1:30, I think everything has been said that needs to be said. People...take note!

Except this...if we, as Jews, break the law/act stupidly, we've got to stop screaming anti semitism. The BBC didn't make this stuff up. They took the ball & ran with it. So? The guy deserved the public humiliation.

57

Jun 25, 2008 at 10:45 AM Anonymous Says:

antisemite ahine, antisemite aher, bottom line is the car was overloaded and he was caught creating a potentially dangerous situation. If not for that, nobody would be the wiser and nobody would be yelling, antisemite, yimach shmoe vezichro...

Jun 25, 2008 at 12:32 PM Abba Englander Says:

I also know this family and if they can afford to travel from London to Wales, presumably not thirteen in a Volvo, then thay can surely afford the taxi fare for some outing.
Also, if the car is overloaded, then the road holding is not the same, nor is thge braking power.
Anyway, why cram so many people in a Volvo, why not in a Smart car? It would be a bigger chochma

I think most posts have summed this up.

A person who can put 13 people into a car, is at best *ah meshigana*! In my opinion he is lucky he got away with a ban & fine and not G-d forbid anything worse!

What if chas vesholom there was an accident. Is he responsible with kids. What sort of conscience would the fella have to live with for the rest of his life! I am not sure who this fella is, but I would suggest the Rabbis have a good strong word with him and advise him not just of the massive Chillul Hashen he has caused but also a lesson in "Venishmartem etc."

Truly upset having to have come across this!
