NYPOST.com (http://bit.ly/1qLpj4h) reports that the BASP’s initial team now consists of about 15 members who, like Shomrim, will act as the “eyes and ears” of the community for police, according to NYPD Deputy Inspector James Grant who helped get the program up and running.

Grant said the group will also be helpful to police in bridging the language barrier in Sunset Park, with BASP members speaking Cantonese, Mandarin, Fujianese, English and other Asian dialects.

Using two 2006 Hyundai patrol cars with Brooklyn Asian Safety Patrol affixed to their sides, BASP’s Louie Lou said, “We drive around with our lights on to let the bad guys know we are here.”
