August 9, 2014-New York City-Governor Andrew M. Cuomo today signed a bill authorizing New York City to lower its speed limits from 30 to 25 miles per hour. The legislation seeks to lower the number of vehicle and pedestrian accidents in New York City and supports the State’s ongoing effort to make roadways safer. (NY STATE)New York – Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed legislation Saturday to lower New York City’s speed limit from 30 mph to 25 mph, saying slowing down will cut down on pedestrian and motorist deaths.

Cuomo was flanked by two traffic signs that read “Speed Limit 25.”

“New Yorkers are fast, New Yorkers like to do things fast, everything is time, everything is pressure, but this says slow down and save a life,” the governor told an audience at Manhattan’s Jacob Javits Convention Center that included families who have lost loved ones in traffic accidents. “New York has a crisis when it comes to pedestrian deaths.”

Last year, the city had 176 pedestrian deaths. Cuomo called that a frightening statistic and said a speed reduction of even 5 mph cuts in half the likelihood of being killed.

The new limit is expected to go into effect in three months, once the city approves its own law formalizing it.

The legislation is part of Mayor Bill de Blasio’s “Vision Zero” plan to try to end traffic deaths in the city.

In a statement, the mayor said, “This is a great day for the families, advocates and officials who have worked so hard to protect their fellow New Yorkers.”

Cuomo noted that while the new limit “makes sense in some places, it doesn’t make sense in other places.” He said local communities will have to consider any exemption.

Overall, the number of people killed in city traffic accidents has increased by about 15 percent in recent years, officials said.

idiots! what they are, especially cuomo. do you think that by lowering it to 25 mph,the accidents will stop? the drivers that kill people are not driving 30 mph, theyre doing over 40 mph,or more.
so, by lowering it to 25 it wont make any difference to these killers.
idiots, again, it will only snarl up traffic,25 mph is not much higher than walking,or bicycling,
can you imagine doing 25 on ocean parkway,?
it’s the same as doing 50 on the palisades,(which is standing still) and you back up the traffic, for 2 miles, with cars behind you.
no, they got it all wrong, if a driver kills a pedestrian by driving recklessly, take away his license, period!
    but dont penalize everyone else.
besides do you really think that the animals behind the wheels will drive 25 mph because of the new law? lol. psst, you wanna buy a bridge?
it will have the same effect as our gun laws, a toothless tiger, whose only victims are the law abiding citizens, and the people who have gun permits.
the criminals will always have guns, they dont abide by any law.
same thing here. more tickets, more $$$ revenue for the politicians( that’s really what it’s all about anyway) . same amount of accidents. A retarded idea.
