Chanoch Kesselman, executive co-ordinator of the Union of Orthodox Hebrew Congregations, complained in a letter to the BBC this week that the first film in Vanessa Engle’s BBC4 series “impinges on the privacy of the Charedi community and opens the way for it to be misrepresented at best and maligned at worst”.
He was upset that the film, which told the story of Samuel Leibovitz, a reformed drug-dealer from the Satmar community, “failed to consider the sensibilities of a community who prefer not to be put in the limelight of television, whatever her motives for making the programme and however sensitively she handled it.
editorial input.”
The BBC, in response, said the programme “informs and enlightens”.
A statement said: “It paints a fair and positive portrait of this community with its strong family values and adherence to strict rules. Everyone taking part gave consent to be filmed.”
In a recent JC interview, Ms Engle stressed that the programme cast the strictly Orthodox in a positive light. She said: “How does the community deal with a case like his? Is continuing to turn your back on the world a viable way for a community to function?

Unfortunately I feel that we need this sort of exposure - too many dropouts are dealing in drugs and ENDANGERING their kehillos (we have just had a spate of revenge stabbings in Manchester of people with no relation to the drug dealer/s)

Why are the hasidic sect so paranoid and sensitive? Listen here fellows, if you choose a very seclusive life style and very closed up, its sure to raise eyebrows amongst the non jews. Kind of like the Amish way of living just with the electricity and gadgets. The Amish have been very accomodating in allowing the outside world know more abouttheir traditions.

Interesting BBC could'nt try to make a film (fiction) of A bikur cholim of the frum, or a Chaverim call, or Hatzolah responding.. I guess they're not looking for negative, only in a "positive" light"..

these sort of protests only serve to give more publicity to a movie, tv show, book, etc.
Protesting has the exact opposite effect.
Their protests have gotten the BBC free publicity.
such protests NEVER, I say NEVER work.

There is only one way to counteract the negative publicity that we Chasidim keep on getting. Let's act like real Mentchen on the street. Don't cut anyone off when driving, let somone pass you,be honest in your business dealings and if your a Chaverim or Hatzalah member help an outsider once in a while.

The film was mostly OK until they got up to the part where they said we use the blood of Christian children in the baking of matzah. Aside from that it was alright.
