Cohen, 20, attends the Orhot David yeshiva in Jerusalem, which is associated with the Jerusalem Faction, a breakaway group from the mainstream non-hassidic haredi Degel Hatorah political movement.
In accordance with the instructions of the movement and its spiritual leader, Rabbi Shmuel Auerbach, 83, Cohen has repeatedly refused to present himself at IDF recruitment offices after receiving conscription orders.
He is being held in the military’s Prison Six facility, near Atlit, and has reportedly begun a hunger strike.
According to the Committee to Save the Torah World, a body associated with the Jerusalem Faction, Cohen received another conscription order last month, and upon refusing to do so was imprisoned for 20 days.
He was subsequently released and again was ordered to report to the recruitment office to be inducted – an order he refuses.

So the question is -me b’rosh-who is the leader of Israel .A charidi gadol or the elected representatives of israel please give an answer.Who will lead the country in times of war, a gadol or the prime minister?
Traitors. Rockets are falling and they protest the IDF?
WE ARE AT WAR! And I vehemently object to my relatives & friends’ children serving to protect these leeches who think setting tires & trash cans on fire is legitimate protest.
I get that Torah studies are #1 for this segment of Israeli society & I have no problem with deferrment or even sherit leumi. Why can’t they volunteer & study half a day? Go into schools and teach limudei Kodesh? Yes, I know you all have answers for everything, but I am sick & tired of this bunch of parasites taking & NEVER giving back.
Lastly…before I get accused of being a goy or some other insult, a brief personal history so you understand my vehemence: I am Chassidic. I have a long history of activism on behalf of my fellow Jews before I moved here, and I am still involved with situations back in the “old country.” I am a writer and long-time educator & I am in my 60’s otherwise I would have joined the IDF by now. But if they give me a gun…(yes, I can shoot.)
If you live in America during wartime, you are going to be drafted. If you live in Israel during wartime, you are going to be drafted. If you don’t want to defend your country while missiles are falling all around you and soldiers are being killed, then you are traitors, a Fifth Column. If you are a Jew and refuse to serve in the army, you are violating the mitzvos involved in going to war to defend against your enemies and defending Eretz Yisrael. If you don’t want to defend Israel, move to another country where you will be happier to live your brand of galus Judaism. I recommend that you request political asylum from friendly European countries such as Belgium, France, England, Poland, the Ukraine, Hungary, Sweden, Turkey or Russia. BON VOYAGE!!!
Pity. Thousands of Jews with no Olam Hazeh or Olam Habah.
Nice! what a great Kidush Hashem!
Can israel rotzchim STOP arresting our jewish innocent boys for nothing??
Hashem punished israel should go to gaza & be busy with hamas so they souldn’t arrest our Jewish innocent young boys like terrorists, was much relax the last 5 weeks go back to gaza now.
These ‘chareidim’ will make great citizens of the new Islamic State.
Keep it up, guys. You show them who is the boss. We lost 6 million because we listened to people who thought that they were ‘daas Torah’. Those ‘people’ are at it again.
War against the Haredim is inevitable. They are parasitic religious extremists who do not negotiate. So be it. Let there be war.
I wish someone would muzzle alterg. what a waste of dna.
Hypnotized zombies is how they are acting, theese demonstrators are all misguided fools.
Too bad the guy with the sign”lekadesh et shmo berabim” doesn’t have a liter of gasoline and some matches to do what he supposedly aspires to.
Kool aid drinkers, but the saddest is where are the “gedolim” how little regard they have even for their neighborhoods, always burning garbage, these guys are not the big learners that we depend on, when there is no derech eretz there is nothing, these boychiks will have some surprise when they meet the malach at the end of time, and will be told, that’s not what we meant by ehrlich behavior, woe to them then, and woe is to us know. they are killing all our nechamos.
as a fellow chasid im appalled by some of the commentators here…yiddin are under attack, at war with rockets flying over….how do these chevra have the chutzpah to protest and overwhelm the security forces whom are already busy….what a chilul hashem what a nerve….primitive people….when will you see reality when a rocket c”v lands in kikar shabbos,,,will reality hit you then? stop your narishket already you all looked stupid you make one big chilul hashem for all….torah learning for all is very important, torah jews sit down and talk intelligently witlh dignity. wild childish demonstration is childish. Portrays charaidim on par with your radical jihad cousins.
Years ago here in the U.S. during th e Vietnam war there was a draft. We all went to register and then used the system to avoid being drafted.
The Israeli government purposely has left so many huge holes for the benefit of the Yeshiva bochurim in the draft system that refusing to register and then use those holes is downright stupid.
“Daas Torah” may tell them not to register, but if the Mir Yeshiva in Vilna listened to what is today called “Daas Torah” the entire Yeshiva would have been wiped out by the Nazis. (Unfortunately there are many “frum” publications over the years that have distorted history in order to cover this up.)
