Mr. Golisano, a three-time gubernatorial contender who is forming a PAC to spread his wealth to candidates across the state who pledge their support for his movement against Albany's establishment, is considering bankrolling an effort to topple Mr. Silver, the longest-serving Democratic speaker in state history.
The possibility that one of New York's wealthiest residents, a sharp-tongued, politically unpredictable businessman who has a history of saturating the state airwaves with his self-financed political ads, may target Mr. Silver has provoked some concern within the speaker's political operation, according to a knowledgeable source.
The involvement of Mr. Golisano in the 64th Assembly district race has the potential to deprive Mr. Silver of one of his strongest advantages: his overwhelming fund-raising lead over his two primary opponents.
Mr. Golisano's PAC, which he is expected to announce next week, could finance political ads attacking Mr. Silver and lend a hand to the ground operation of one of his opponents.

Why in the world would the folks in Sheldon Silver district want to replace him with a couple of young radical upstarts. His opponents are way out there beyond left field. At a time when the Democrats could take back the state house why would the replace him with a beginner? The only guy fighting for the regular new yorker when there were 3 in the room was Shelly. Bruno and Pataki vs Shelly thank G-D he was there for us.

The only time Silver helps the regular new yorker is if the new yorker happens to be a trial attorney. Silver is a partner in a law firm and the lawyers come first.

Silver led the effort to defeat the West Side stadium , because he was helping a regular new yorker named James Dolan. Dolan just happens to own Cablevision and Madison Square Garden and is a big bankroller of Silver. Many average New Yorkers wanted the stadium, Dolan the billionaire didn't.

Shelly let new york down with the stadium. New york would've benefitted big time.

New Yorkers would have benefitted from the stadium? Sticking a facility that seats over 50,000 people in an area already congested beyond belief due to the proximity to the Lincoln Tunnel would have benefitted us? Not quite.
The Mayor himself is now crusading for less congestion which is ironic considering the stadium plans.
Shelly Silver fought congestion pricing primarily because his entire district is within the "zone" that would have had to pay $8 meaning EVERY SINGLE constituent of his who owned a car would be losing money daily. If he supported it, he would have lost reelection by a landslide.
I think some of you forget that the speaker of a legislative body represents his district first. They elect him. Silver is a good legislator who has fought numerous battles for the residents of the Lower East Side primarily to protect his district from the experiments of the Mayor who would NEVER institute congestion pricing on his precious Upper East district of millionaires who could easily afford to pay it.
Any voter in the Lower East Side who cares about the middle class will vote for Silver.

does anyone really think shelly or any other politician cares about what is or osn't good foor the people. without going into all the details, the stadium didn't happen because shelly felt the need (perhaps justifiably) to put bloomberg in his place.
shelly won, bloomberg lost. bloomberg just doesn't really understand politics. he couldn't get congestion pricing passed either.
as longs as we can't smoke or eat trans-fat, go-bloomy

Just a side note to Anonymous 9:50...
You believe that Shelly voted no on the stadium due to ties to the Dolan family.
I guess you weren't aware that the Jets are owned by Robert Wood Johnson IV, a billionaire heir to the Johnson & Johnson fortune who happens to be a massive donor to the Republican party.
I guess you also weren't aware that the parking lot magnates of midtown were among the biggest supporters of the stadium because that's where everyone would put their cars when attending games.
What was that about Shelly going against the average New Yorker again?

Speaker Silver has been of tremendous help to the Jewish community and deserves our support. Just to mention two of his accomplishments, it is now just about impossible to for an employer to fire someone for refusing to work in Shabat without breaking the law (this is not the case in most of the rest of the US) and many Jewish kids have been born to couples who had had trouble having children because the government mandates insurance coverage for assisted reproductive technologies. Furthermore, Speaker Silver is a shomer Shabat yeshiva graduate who has repeatedly sanctified the name of HaShem by refusing to do governmental business on Shabat even when Republicans blasted him for it. I will send him a contribution today.

Anon 229 left out that under Silver,
propery tax increases jumped skyhigh for homeowners while the Yankees and Mets get all the benefits they want.

Actually the benefits given to the Yankees and Mets came primarily from the city whereas a mere 2 weeks ago the Democratic led Assembly called for a stop to the obscene amount of money being handed to the Yankees after they requested another 350 million dollars.
Please stay current on the issues before posting, it's getting tiresome.

I recently met Sheldon Silver with a personal problem. He took considerable time to assist me and I am not even a donor to anything. He was professional, courteous, and compassionate.
It was then I realized, that while carrying the dignity of his office, he was also modest.
I couldn't help but think of what his eyshes chayil and children gave up all those years when he lived in Albany for kiddush shem shomayim.
He has been a great asset for Klal Yisroel and especially New Yorkers.
There comes a time when one has to choose between bedavke fighting to prove a point or to say "i will leave at the top of my career" and let the young people take over. And to the critics
"geit shlugt aych kop in der vant." I am off to enjoy my pension and my grandkids and eretz yisroel etc. etc. G-d knows the kiddush Hashem I am leaving in office for the years and years I served. Today, we never again have the old school Chazzonim of yesteryear, and we will never have a Shelly silver again like a rabbi Moshe Sherer.

as an average manhattanite i want to go on record saying thank you to sheldon silver for killing the stadium and killing congestion pricing. manhattan cant afford to have more traffic which is exactly what we would have gotten out of the stadium. its hard enuf to get around manhattan as is, who wants a stadium to make it worse. silver is a frum yid and we should be proud of him and ready to lend a hand if needed to defeat the others. i figure that silver may have voted against something golisano wanted so now golisano is going against him. golisano lives upstate, let him play politics there, not in manhattan .
silver, yasher koach to you.

golisano is part of the billionaires club, prob friends with bloomy who is anti shelly coz shelly has the u know what to stand up to bloomy.
billionaires think that our citys are a toy for them to play with. i resent it. they have no clue what life is like for the average person who lives paycheck to paycheck. let them sit on line and watch their portfolios go up instead of playing with our well being.
