Beit Shemesh, Israel – Violence Erupts As Planned Haredi/Secular Segregation Keeps Beit Shemesh Elementary School Closed

Beit Shemesh residents clashed after the municipality decided to create a seperation between secular and ultra orthodox students at the "Language and Cultures" school on the first day of the new school year, September 1, 2014. The municipality decided to put up fences to create a seperation for new classes for Ultra Orthodox girls, causing a controversy and protest. The Ministry of Education decided to cancel the first day of school in reaction to the municipality's actions. Photo by Nati Shohat/Flash90 Beit Shemesh, Israel – Doors remained closed on Monday at the Safot Vetarbuyot elementary school in Beit Shemesh following a night of violence during which parents opposed to the city’s plans to separate Haredi and secular students clashed with security guards and constructions workers who are building the segregated wing.

HAARETZ.com (http://bit.ly/1qvYXVp) reports that protesters were back on the lines Monday, with reports of minor injuries resulting from scuffles with religious protesters.

Eli Cohen, a city councilman in opposition to the segregated wing, called the proposed wing “the beginning of the end” of the Zionism in Beit Shemish.

The Education Ministry has sided with opponents too, having already threatened to pull the city’s education budget if the plan is put into place, but municipal leaders have not been swayed, saying the plan is merely to ensure that children from “all sectors” will have a “proper place to study.”

This is a school that is 3/4 empty and the municipality decided to give part of the building to a charedi school in a charedi neighborhood. A sensible division was done. No 2 schools operate in a big building without separation.
The Jew-haters still didn’t come to terms that they are the minority in the city and have lost the last 3 elections, including 2 this year and are trying to riot now. It won’t help them.

Do you really believe either side would co-exist in the same building without a mechitza? Are you really so naive?

The school in question is in the middle of the chareidi section. It has enough space for 500 students and currently has only 150. The Beis Yaakov that needed space serves local people, the Tarbut school busses in students from other areas. The municipality did the right thing to address the needs of the local people without affecting the use of the building for the seculars. The municipality tried to settle the issue several years ago but the parents of the children being bussed in were obstinate. People like Lippman would be the first to jump on board had the situation been the exact reverse. This is nothing other than grandstanding at the cost of hundreds of children. Would you want your daughter not to be able to go to school when there is a totally serviceable 3/4 empty school available right next door? is this fair? is it just? what about the rights of the chareidi children? are they 2nd class citizens?
As for the wall, how do you propose to split a building for two different schools to use? flower mechizas? get real!
I would recommend that Lippman stop wearing a yarmullka, he is a grobbe sheigeitz.

Can’t you all stop calling each other names? You scream about Elul etc & then insult fellow Yidden. Stick to the issues & stop behaving like children. You can debate calmly and rationally. Then again, maybe you can’t. Oy are we in trouble, stop beiting the Aibishter for Moshiach, he is not coming while you keep insulting each other.

    Now go ahead, attack me.

I live in Bet Shemesh & I have absolutely no idea what all the fuss is about – from either side. In fact, the first I knew about any of it was on VIN. No TV or radio or papers & no kids in school either. But I do see extremists on both sides fanning the flames of divisiveness, it is very troubling.

The School is owned/run by the Department of Education not the Municipality. The municipality brought in a contractor in the middle of the night the night before the first day of school without approval or communication with anyone. Sounds fishy? Secondly the school has been there long before the Chareidim moved in. If the holier than thou Shasnik mayor of the city actually cared about these girls that allegedly have no place to learn he should have dealt with this through the proper channel long ago. This is obviously another attempt to get rid of anyone not chareidi in Bet Shemesh. When will the chareidi educational system once and for all get with the program and understand they cant do what ever they want. Its bad enough the chareidi system doesnt give its students many of the basic skills they need to aquire a decent job and support thier families.
