New York – OU Seeking Drivers As TLC Green Lights Next Installment Of Green Cabs

New York – A Jewish job board has announced 150 newly opened slots for taxi drivers, less than two weeks after the Taxi and Limousine Commission released the second installment of permits for an additional 6,000 green “Boro Taxis” to serve upper Manhattan and the outer boroughs.

The apple green taxi fleet, which includes a percentage of wheelchair accessible vehicles, was created to better serve residents of the Bronx, Queens, Brooklyn, Staten Island and northern Manhattan as well as those with disabilities. The green cabs are associated with local car services affiliated with the Boro Taxi program and are licensed by the Taxi and Limousine Commission.

Green Apple Cabs LLC, a Five Towns based fleet owned by two Orthodox men, has tasked the Orthodox Union with filling 150 new driver jobs created by the recent release of new permits by the TLC.

“They gave me this opportunity and asked me to fill these slots with heimishe people,” Michael Rosner, executive director of the OU’s job board, told VIN News. “What makes it really good is that for people in the Jewish community who don’t have a great education or a proper resume, this is a great opportunity to make good money.”

Potential drivers must have either a Class A, B, C or E drivers license, which will enable them to obtain a TLC Hack license or ParaTransit license. The TLC will screen all potential drivers, who must also pass a drug test and fill out a medical form.

According to Rosner, these positions are particularly well suited to the Jewish community, because a driver can easily work their schedule around Shabbos and Yomim Tovim. Additionally, Green Apple Cabs works with various city organizations, giving them a large number of prearranged pickups.

“What makes this particular fleet so good is that because most of the vehicles accommodate the disabled, whose pickups are usually prescheduled and pre-assigned, they won’t have to spend all of their day hunting the streets looking for fares,” said Rosner.

Rosner estimated that drivers who work ten hour shifts could potentially gross $2,000 weekly.

“We feel very good about this,” said Rosner. “This could be very helpful to the average person who just wants to make a parnassa.”

Response to the announcement has been very positive and within 15 minutes of its posting, Rosner had already received 10 applications.

Boro Taxis, which can be both hailed on the street or dispatched to pick up passengers, may drop off passengers anywhere in the city but are not allowed to pick up passengers south of West 110th Street or East 96th Street in Manhattan. While the green taxis cannot pick up fares at JFK or La Guardia, pre-arranged airport pickups at both airports are permitted. All Boro Taxis are equipped with debit/credit card readers, charge the same rates as yellow taxis and are inspected twice a year by the TLC.

The first Boro Taxi began serving New York City on August 8th, 2013.

“Rosner estimated that drivers who work ten hour shifts could potentially gross $2,000 weekly.”
Wow! What a misleading statement. Sounds like an ad for those work at home schemes where the worker in end makes almost nothing.
It’s not the gross earnings that are meaningful. It’s the net.
The driver has to give a very significant percentage (50%- 70% depending on who owns the vehicle, etc.) to the bsiness for which he is driving.
