Jerusalem- The Democratic Party's presidential candidate, Barack Obama, is to come to Israel in another two weeks as part of a regional tour he intends to take.

The precise date of Obama's visit has been kept under wraps for security reasons, but as best as can be ascertained he will be arriving in Israel on either July 22 or 23 for a two to three day visit. No agenda has yet been set for that visit, but Obama is expected to meet with President Shimon Peres, Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Foreign Minister Tzippi Livni and Defense Minister Ehud Barak.

Obama will tour a number of sites in Israel, and one possibility being looked into is for him to visit Sderot, as John McCain, the Republican Party's candidate did. McCain visited the Kassam stricken town in the company of Defense Minister Ehud Barak, and subsequently said in an interview that the visit had made a deep impression on him.

In a recent meeting between them, Opposition Chairman Binyamin Netanyahu suggested that Obama visit Sderot, and Obama said that he would certainly consider that positively.

Obama's tour of the Middle East, in the course of which he will also visit Iraq and Afghanistan, is geared to persuade the American voters that he has the political and international experience needed to be the commander in chief of the American army.

Officials in the Democratic Party ascribe a great deal of importance to the upcoming visit to Israel as part of the effort to win the Jewish vote in the November election.
