Hartford, CT – One of two men convicted in the killings of a mother and her two daughters in a 2007 Connecticut home invasion is suing the state, claiming his rights are violated because he’s being denied kosher food in prison.

The New Haven Register reports (http://bit.ly/1whIt57 ) that death row inmate Steven Hayes describes himself as an orthodox Jew and claims he’s been requesting a kosher diet since May 2013.
Hayes also says denying him a kosher diet violates his Eighth Amendment right that forbids cruel and unusual punishment because he must eat non-kosher food to survive.
A spokeswoman for the Department of Correction declined to comment and said the lawsuit has been referred to the attorney general. A spokeswoman said the attorney general will respond in court.
Give him a kosher buried soon.
This individual, along with his associate stalked a family, broke into their home, beat, and tied up the Father. Then, they tortured, abused, and tied up a Mother and her two daughters. Afterwards, they forced the Mother to withdraw money from a bank. She complied with their demands, but Hayes strangled her to death, anyway, when she returned. Hayes and his associate, then set fire to the home, and the two daughters burned to death. The local cops in this case were incompetent, as they could have rushed the house sooner, instead of waiting outside. The two daughters could have been saved. Both Hayes and his partner were career criminals, who should never have been on parole. These two savage animals should never be released, even if their death sentences are overturned. Also, Hayes should be denied Kosher food, because he is no Orthodox Jew. He and his partner are the lowest of the lowest scum.
You did a terrible crime so you get terrible food. Deal with it.
Since when is he Orthodox or Jewish at all? Was he born Jewish? And who is the Rabbi who is consulting him? This murderer is 1 of the worst human beings ever walking on this earth.
I will never understand how a person that commits a crime, especially murder, can claim to be orthodox. There are more requirements for an orthodox Jew besides eating kosher food. Please don’t give me the “he did teshuva” story. Is he doing anything else with his life to be a better Jew besides making trouble with the Department of corrections? Let him show everyone that he is truly an orthodox Jew from his heart and then we can talk about giving him his kosher food.
IMHO, this man is causing a Chillul-Hashem by calling himself an “orthodox Jew”.
The same logic as stated by many above can be applied to the many ” Orthodox Jews” that currently reside in Ottisville. Yet they get from what I hear, great Kosher meals and have daily minyonim. ( I know youll respond, but they commited Federal offenses that didnt physically hurt anyone) The millions of dollars that many of those people swindled hurt countless people financially. So none of those people should call themselves ” Orthodox religious” as well.

Public Defender Thomas Ullmann, who has represented Hayes, said he is pleased Hayes “has some spiritual interest and is occupying his mind.”
“He has been consulting and speaking with a rabbi, and has been asking for more time with the rabbi,” he said.
Hayes’ desire for kosher food is a “legitimate request,” Ullmann said.
Hayes was convicted of capital felony, murder, sexual assault and other crimes and sentenced to death for the July 2007 killings of Jennifer Hawke-Petit and her two daughters, 17-year-old Hayley and 11-year-old Michaela, after a night of torment in their home in Cheshire. Another man, Joshua Komisarjevsky, also was convicted and sentenced to death.
Hayes has sued before. A federal judge in November 2012 denied a lawsuit seeking to change his prison conditions, ruling he did not provide evidence his mental health treatment was inadequate or back up his request for changes to his diet.
He also complained his legal papers were confiscated as a form of harassment or retaliation. The judge said Hayes did not show irreparable harm.

Sorry guys but you’re not the one to judge. If any of you are orthodox at all you should know that as long as a yidish kosher bais din doesn’t convict him he is according to Jewish law innocent. And besides the point that even if a Jew is the worst of the worst and he does even a small mitzvah it is counted greatly by hashem so, all of you who put these great comments think of what great yiddin you are to talk like this before you wanna kill a yidisha neshama.
He is surely entitled to kosher meals. I would think even someone sentenced to death by a Bais Din still needs to keep all the Mitzvos until the sentence is carried out. I’m not proud of him and he may deserve the death penalty but I don’t see the relevance to his right to kosher food. His sincerity and possible Tshuva are not for us to judge.
Actually not keeping Shabbos is worse than murder.
First I’ve heard that he’s Jewish. Any thing to prove he has a Jewish mother? Does he observe anything or only wants better food?
