The car will give riders sweeping vistas of Lake Champlain and the Adirondacks from Sept. 25 through Nov. 4.
The car features an upper level with windows on all sides to provide panoramic views of the colorful foliage between Albany and Montreal.
The dome car will operate northbound from Albany to Montreal on Thursdays, Saturdays and Mondays and return south from Montreal on Fridays, Sundays, and Tuesdays. Dome car trips are not made on Wednesdays.
Trails and Rails volunteers will be aboard select dome car trips offering historical commentary between Saratoga Springs and Westport.
The car, built in 1955, is the only remaining dome car in Amtrak service.
Wow. I traveled across the country in a whole lengthy train of them in 1958. They were wonderful.
The Chinese have mag-lev trains. The French have trains that go 200MPH. We have trains from our grandfathers’ time. Wonderful.
#2 if you were interested in getting from Albany to Montreal quickly, you would not choose the 9 hour train ride on Amtrak…you would drive in four hours. However, if you are choosing the Dome car presumably you are taking it for the trip itself, rather than the destination.
It’s about the ride and scenery, not the arrival in the new city! Enjoy the ride and smell the roses.
To #2 -PaulinSaudi-You don’t even live in the USA. You live in a society, where the religious police follow people at random, and make sure that the women wear that smatah, and that the men are not seen socializing with women in public. In the society which you live in, women are not permitted to drive. In Saudi Arabia, people have their hands chopped off, for a variety of offenses. Yet, you have the chutzpah to criticize our railroad system! What kind of passenger rail service exists in Saudi? You mean to tell me that you have fast trains there? I don’t think so!
The NYC-Montreal train ride is very beautiful. It goes along the Hudson River and then along the shore of Lake Champlain.
The Alaska Railroad has numerous dome cars; just last month I took one from Anchorage to Seward. It was spectacular.
