Israel - The Education Ministry is threatening to withdraw the license of the Beit Yaakov girls' school in Immanuel unless it halts its policy of separating Ashkenazi and Mizrahi students.

Until recently the ministry tended to accept the position, according to which the separation is based on educational and religious, not ethnic, factors.

In February the nonprofit Noar Kehalakha, which fights anti-Mizrahi discrimination in the ultra-Orthodox school system, submitted a petition to the High Court of Justice alleging clear discrimination at the school.

The suit claims that the school decided to place most of the Ashkenazi students in separate classrooms. The school building was split, with a fence and separate entrances for girls from Ashkenazi and from Mizrahi families. In addition, the two groups began their day at different times and wore different uniforms.

In a letter sent to the center's attorney, the ministry wrote that in the absence of such a program and criteria the ministry will consider delicensing the school, "with all that implies on the level of economic sanctions and the cut of ministry support for the school."

The ministry is to submit a response to the High Court of Justice on the issue within days.

12:36 Mizrachi are not Sephardim. Actually, most Misrachis are Ashkenazim.

Unfortunately, this story is true, I researched it from many different directions and have a friend that lives in Emanuel, every word is true.
It's so sad, how survivors of Nazi Persecution, could be so openly racist. of course with spiritual motives, just like the nazis. Remember? the Nazis also had their justifications.
for thise living in the U.S.A. it's extremely hard to believe that people can be so bad in the name of our holy religion, but anyone familiar with Israeli Charedi Society knowns How true this is.
May god Protect us

I think the article WAS referring to Sephardim, not Mizrachim. Mizrachis don't go to the same school as Charedim, so it must mean Sephardim.

Sadly, this is the reality of most frum schools both in the US and Israel, not officially of course.

Racism against Sephardim/Mizrachim is a fact of life and always has been. (I was the Sephardic scapegoat in my MO day school 35 years ago and then my children all went through it).

This article is talking about Sephardic Jews not Mizrachi, It's been in the news for a while, funny no one had the courage to say something outloud against it. The Yated in it's usual bias, condemned a few protesters who tried to protest this racism, claiming they had no connection to the school. Thanks again Yated for being our ultimate source of cause for anti-religious feeling. And thanks VIN for bringing up this sad story.
note: Yated in Americas is independent of teh Yated Lo Ne'eman of Israel

Wait! Do both schools teach the same Havarah, Language, or Studies? It's possible the Sefaradim are being taught in the Sefaradic style, while the Ashkenazim are taught in the Ashkenazim style. So it actualy is 2 differrent schools, and is
probably exactly what 98% of the parents want.
So don't accuse of racism without further research.

When will we all finally see ourselves as Ish Echud B'leiv Echud. Our schools here are no different. They don't feel that 90% of yiddishe kinderlach are good enough for their institution.
In a small town every Yid is appreciated.
What horrible message are we sending? We can pick and choose because there are Boruch Hashem so many Yiddishe Neshomolach to choose from!!

THE VAAD'S IN ALL OF THESE SCHOOLS ARE GOING TO HAVE TO ANSWER TO HASHEM ONE DAY. I can't wait to see them groveling then.

to Chacham Mah Nishtana Says:
what I'm saying is AFTER further research, It's very nice that you are so kind and can't belive someone can be so much the opposite, but unfortunately, truth is sadder then fiction, and worse then you think.
The Sephardic girls are not ALLOWED to go to the Ashkenazi Seperate but equal school, Israeli Media got a young girl on video tape a while ago telling younger girls not to speak to the Franks, whith a stern warning in Yiddish. Some parents tried to show signs of protests, but were quickly shut up with fears that they would be thrown out of the (Ultra?)orthodox society. When can we start being Ovdei Hashem and Yerei Shamayim and stop being Charedim, scared? of what? not of God that's for sure.
Any time you smell something like seperate but equal, you ought to know something is seriesly wrong, and besides the fact that the school recieves funding from Israeli tax-payers. If you want to recieve gov. funds you have to follow the rules, like it or not, or take a walk to America and fundraise on teh holyplatforn of "not taking any money from the Zionim"

The question is; Where were they (the court and the ministry of education) until now?! What a shame! [if true]! They should be de-funded and closed! There are no excuses or loopholes!
