Jerusalem, Israel - Israeli police went on high alert Saturday after a gunman opened fire on policemen standing outside the walls of the Old City, wounding two of them before fleeing on foot.

"Our forces have been placed on high alert after the attack on Friday night which wounded two Israeli policemen, and which we believe was a terrorist attack," police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

"One (policeman) is in critical condition and the other was seriously wounded," he said, adding that both had been rushed to a nearby hospital.

The attack took place near the Lion's Gate, one of several entrances through the walls that surround the Old City which opens onto mostly Arab east Jerusalem.

Police returned fire before the attacker fled through a nearby Muslim cemetery, Rosenfeld said. Police have since launched a manhunt focused on the east Jerusalem neighborhood of Wadi Joz and other nearby Palestinian villages.

TO BIG MIKE: I live in Israel and deal with them. All i can say is they are a disgrace for the name of police and every Israeli religious or secular will tell you the same. Unfortunately in America many local police departments are just as bad as i have dealt with them from personal experience.

The Police and other law enforcement agencies in Israel (like building inspectors, etc.) have gone PC! (politically correct). Especially where the palestinians are concerned. Not that they are to blame. The dictates of the "Supreme Court", under the tutelage (not a made-up word) of Prof. (retired chief justice) Aharon Barak took the fear [and respect] of the Law out of the hearts of the palestinian criminals and other terrorists and put it in to the people standing on the front lines of civilization!!!
