Detroit, MI - Dr. Heshy Josephs is a 72 year old father of five and grandfather of K”AH thirty-six aineklach. So what makes him different than your ordinary Zaidy? It’s not often that you’ll meet a Zaidy biking through rural America, Teffilin, Chumash and Gemorah in tow, pedaling his way from Detroit, Michigan to Lakewood, New Jersey.

That’s right, Dr. Josephs, a local of Detroit is undertaking the 750 mile bike ride in an effort to raise much needed funds for the P’TACH Michigan Chapter.

Why PTACH Michigan Chapter?

Both Dr. & Mrs. Josephs have been involved in the P’TACH Michigan chapter since its inception 30 years ago. As the Secular principal in Yeshiva Bais Yehudah, Mrs. Josephs knew all too well the dilemma parents of children with special needs faced in those days: either send your child to public school, where they brought home X-mas and Thanksgiving projects instead of Shabbos & Yom Tov work, or send him to a Jewish school where he would not receive the educational help he needs. Touched by the problem many parents of special needs children were facing, Dr. & Mrs. Josephs set about starting a P’TACH chapter in Michigan. Since then, they have devoted their time and energy ensuring that every Yiddishe child receives the Yiddishe education they deserve. The Josephs have dedicated their life to PTACH and to all the students that they have helped, and are always willing to “go the extra mile” for the kids. With the enormous undertaking of his one man bike-a-thon, Dr. Josephs proves just how many extra miles he is willing to go – 750 to be exact.

While this may be a one man bike-a-thon Dr. Josephs welcomes anyone who wants to join him during the physical trek of the bike ride. But of course, for those who don’t have the gumption to join him physically, he hopes they will at least participate spiritually, by sponsoring as many miles as they can to raise money for PTACH Michigan Chapter.

You can track Dr. Josephs’ & find out more about his journey by visiting his site.

Danny 9:29PM. ...What's wrong with thanksgiving projects(?!) I did them in Yeshiva"?" (wrong loc. for punctuation)... ...There's nothing wrong with [celebrating] Thanksgiving!! But some of the details of the story the way it's taught in Public School is not for a Yiddishe child!! Besides, when other [Yiddishe] children celebrate Chanuka or the Seder, the Special-needs child who attends Public School would sing "Jingle Bells..."! (true story!) Also, the teacher would take the children (with the group) to McDonald's!!!

Danny:

Jews used to go to shul on Thanksgiving (it is yom chamishi) and the rov give a drasha on the meaning of freedom and what it means for a Yid to live in America.

How can you say PTACH is all smoke and mirrors, learning disabilities are a serious problem, that was largely not recognized before organizations like PTACH. A child who is struggling in school because of an undiagnosed learning disability is not only failing school, but can feel like a failure and affect his whole attitude about himself, life and Yiddishkeit. I personally know Dr. & Mrs. Josephs and they put their hearts and souls into every child that goes through PTACH -- how can you call that smoke and mirrors. And Danny, I think you misread the article, no one was saying there is something wrong with Thanksgiving or patriotism (I also happen to feel it is very important to be patriotic and thankful to America) but when a Yiddishe child isn't receiving any Yiddishe education, then that is a terrible thing.
