Washington – Senior government officials stated on Sunday that the FBI gave information to Israel’s Shin Bet security regarding the Facebook account of a missing IDF soldier in an effort to locate him during the war in Gaza over the summer.

Officials denied reports from Israel Hayom, the Jerusalem Post and Channel 1 in Israel that the FBI withheld the information from Israeli security, reports Haaretz (http://bit.ly/1rnGvLV).
All three media outlets published reports by Steven Emerson, executive director of the Investigative Project on Terrorism, stating that after Oron Shaul went missing during Operation Protective Edge, Hamas hacked his Facebook page and posted that they had captured the soldier. The report states that Israeli intelligence was turned down by the FBI after requesting information from Shaul’s Facebook page.
Emerson – who has written articles in recent years against the Obama administration – claims the Justice Department stated that because Israel and the United States do not have a treaty on legal cooperation, the information would not be passed on.
Senior officials call the claim, “incorrect and misleading,” stating that in trying to locate Shaul, the FBI conducted investigative activities after further requests from Israel for information.
